Because you can have huge, expansive environments with sweeping vistas but with repeated textures and few individual landmarks or you can have small, enclosed environments packed full of interesting oddities you can't have both.

I'll take the former over the latter any day. I do not find everything being five steps from each other to be conducive to portraying an expansive world at all.

To be honest, there aren't many landmarks in the game already that 1.0 didn't have. In-fact, this game reuses tons of textures for the overworld, the only thing different I see is that this game's world is much smaller.
I personally preferred 1.0's approach to world design too, but they had only a couple of landmarks of the scale of the sea serpent skeleton in la noscea in both size and detail. V2 has 2 or 3 of these per zone.
I remember having to help my wife stay in supply of cobalt arrows.

I miss loads from before ARR. I think I preferred it to now.
I miss the skill flexibility like being able to use fire as a lnc.
It's just a shame they threw it all away instead of just improved upon it.

Lv 60 Gobbues one-shoting you as you came out of limsa hoping to slay a rat or two. Fun time. xD
Tell you what, the moment you kill that SOB Dodo that ganked you when you were level 1 was priceless.
Still remember Closed Beta of V1 watching everyone charge out of Limsa (when the servers let you), kill 2 marmots easily then hit that big soft bird over there...
And thus people learned about home points and returning.

I want to go back to Coerthas.
I want to feel a sense of danger while wandering around Mor Dhona.
I kinda just... Want to play 1.0 again for a month.
