As long as he keeps hate during the fight, who cares?

I always laugh in levi at all the pld who pull adds with provoke and they always end up on the healer or dps, yet mine with tomahawk never go to anyone but me.
In addition to the sentiments above, if you can wait about 2 seconds, for the Medica II or regen to tick, you can get a little extra hate through provoke before shield lob. Think of it as off-CD 20-100 hate that you didn't have before. It is also helpful to get your name and position on the map on its hate IMMEDIATELY so that it doesn't run to the healers, stop, then run to you, as DRG and MNK (and even BLM sometimes) will have a hard time doing maximum dps to the add if it is moving around. Not just from not being able to complete an ability, but from positional checks as well.

Provoke in this situation will snap the mobs attention faster than shield lob/tomahawk, NOT using an off-GCD, long range skill that will increase your hate by even 20 before using an ON GCD, mid-range skill is a waste of that Provoke key on your hotbar in this situation, as you will not need it again before its CD is up.

Being skilled is not only knowing the script of the fight and executing your job but knowing how your skills interact with the current and subsequent portions of the fight.
