FFXIV Restarting After Character Select

Hello! I'm having a big problem recently...

As of like a week ago (No idea what changed, been running FFXIV fine before since release) my computer has been restarting after I select my character and it goes halfway through the loading screen to the game.

It's really annoying... because I can't play FFXIV at all.

Help :/

Sounds like a GPU-problem.

It doesn't happen with any other game. And I don't think it's a heating issue because the game doesn't even load my character for my card to heat up...

The GPU may not display what is happening, but it IS doing all the work during the loading screen. It does sound like a heating issue (without more information, at least), so I would suggest checking that out. FF14 is /really/ horrible about heating cards too much.

That said, we can narrow down that very issue, or figure out if its another issue, if you would use the FF14 config tool post your computer specs to us, as well as a list of how your FF14 is configured. Pay particular attention to General Draw Quality, Shadows, AA, and AO - those are the ones that have the most impact on performance. Once those are all posted, we'll see what we can do to help.

Also consider, in the meantime, trying the most recent video drivers, though depending on your particular brand/model of GPU, you may have better luck with older cards.

Remember, this randomly started happening a few days ago, been running fine ever since then.

I have MSI Afterburner up at all times to see GPU temp, it was not at abnormal temps.

The issue happened with slightly outdated drivers. I updated drivers, then it seemed to stop for one login. Then it happened again today, so I guess that eliminates drivers.

My GPU is a nVidia GTX 480.

My config is:

Windowed - 1440x900 resolution
Multisampling: 2x MSAA
General Drawing Quality: 8
Background Drawing Quality: 5
Shadow Detail: Standard
Texture Quality/Filtering: High/Highest
No ambient occlusion or depth of field

I'm not sure how this could be a heating issue if my card was nowhere near dangerous levels >< Also, if it's a GPU problem, why so suddenly, and why only with FFXIV?

Could it somehow be RAM?

I'm getting a new case and power supply soon to help with heating issues (because when FFXIV did work, it did get a little hot, never dangerous though)

Here's some more information that probably is random and not relevant:

I just tried logging in to my other character (Was in Uldah) and got on just fine. Ok. So I logged out and switched to my main character (Was in La Noscea) and it happened again. Before it was happening in Southern Thanalan, so I doubt where my character is is an issue.

To make sure my character for some reason wasn't cursed, I logged on him on my bro's computer and everything was just fine.

I'm so confused...

Well, if the temps are fine, obviously it isn't a heating issue, and with the additional information, I have a suggestion for you. In your documents / my games folder should be a folder for Final Fantasy. Create a folder on your desktop, and drag everything in your documents/games/final fantasy folder into the folder on your desktop. Return only the Users folder back to the FF folder, and launch the game. If you have -not- customized anything (no key bindings, haven't moved any widgets, changed chat colors etc.) then don't restore the users folder either.

Seems to that those steps fixes a lot of local problems in FF, so give it a shot, see what happens.

If that really solves the issue FFXIV must be horribly coded to crash the system on an internal bug xD

I did that and logged on my main fine.

Gotta go to work now, but I'll try again later to see if it was a fluke. I also just now went and put my config back to how it was (since doing folder thing deleted my config settings) so I guess we'll see :X

If this works, what's the reasoning? :O

Corrupt config/user files. Can happen if the game crashes, you don't log out properly or same dev screwed up.
