Man. I have to try this out now. Do they really beat them with their books/bows/wands?

When I came back to FFXIV, I was expecting conjurer/thaumaturge to have a ranged auto attack, since that's what they had before. It never made any sense, and still doesn't, for a thm/blm or cnj/whm to run up to an enemy and thwack it with their highly delicate piece of shrubbery or gaudy keepsake.
I sort of expected arcanist to have a ranged attack too, for the same reason, but some people really wanted to experience their librarian love, I guess. ; . ;

as a note, one of the questions in the THM questline gives you the option to answer "hit them with my cudgle!"

in 1.0 when we had ammo (thank the lord that's gone) Archers/Bards used to have a wimpy little punch as an auto attackIn that case why give casters an auto-attack at all? And ACN before the late thirties (38-39?) aren't very bursty since any attacks not from their pets are basically all DOTs, and using Scholar means the pets don't even do that. (Admittedly a pretty small slice of character leveling.)
Auto-attacks on caster isn't entirely useless. When theres are moves that doesn't require a cast time (Scathe, Fire/Thunder procs, Ruin II, Bio), your character is able to auto while you wait for the GCD.

Auto attacking on a SMN is worth about 20-25dps. On a dummy. So that's at least 5-10 more dps in a real fight whenever you give your character a second to whack the enemy. I love seeing my character hit Twin in the ass when I run in for a conflag.
