Mistakes can make things more exciting!

Some of the most fun I've had playing dungeons is when things do not go smoothly and it forces you to do a non-standard run and think on the spot.

In the Stone Vigil the healer kept dying and I took over doing the heals as a black mage using acn's psysick x-class move. On the last boss, the healer and one dps died, so it was left to just the tank and me for half the battle. I had to spam psysick a lot on the tank because blm mind stat is low, then quickly use blizzard to get an umbral ice stack for mp recovery. We actually beat it with just two people and it felt extra rewarding. The same thing has happened to me on the chimera of cutter's cry.

I've also had a tank drop from the party in Toto-Rak at the very start of the dungeon and we did the whole thing as a 3-man party with me doing the tanking as an arcanist with topaz carbunkle. Our healer had to work extra hard, but we beat the whole dungeon without a tank somehow.

Share your own stories of glory against the odds.

Hey, were you in Toto-Rak with one of my friends, conjurer Wyra? He was describing that story to me!!

I love unconventional dungeon runs. Unfortunately, they take "longer" than speed running so people sometimes get angsty. I remember a tank dropping/dc'ing in Tam-Tara and we just did the rest of the place as healer/archer/caster. Pretty fun.

The times you succeed without a healer or without a tank are always fun. I've had a couple of runs recently where the healer died on the last boss in Brayflox HM, and I had to take over healing the tank as BLM - fortunately there's not that much unavoidable damage, so it worked out fine. And I've done most of a run of Sastasha with no tank (not even a Carbuncle) due to a disconnection, including several boss encounters, before we finally got a new tank in time for the last boss.

We had a situation in Halatali HM before they fixed the Instance patch where our WHM was dying at the end of the second phase of the last boss fight. Not their fault mind you but they ended up dying. I was on BLM at the time and had to switch in healing mode to keep the tank and dps alive while they killed the Manticore (we had killed the THM prior to WHM's death). It was fun though scary with having to physick everything.

Okay then. that's what I'll do. I'll tell you a story. Can you hear them? All these people who lived in terror of you and your judgement. All these people who's ancestors devoted themselves to you, sacrificed themselves to you. Can you hear them singing?

One of the most fun I had was when I went through copperbell mines (story version) at the boss where you have to kill the bombs before the giant pops the whole party wiped, and returned, I was still up on my ACN, summoned Topaz carbuncle who tanked the giant and won from about 50% completely solo.

This kind of thing is fun, when your team suddenly has to pull together and pull of an unexpected win, or at least make a good showing of it.

Once in Cutter's Cry, my group screwed up and mostly wiped on the first boss. I was the last one standing as a BLM with only a sliver of health left. Despite all odds I actually managed to kite the whole mess of enemies around the room and finish off the Princess with nothing but instant cast spells.

But while that kind of miracle play is great, that doesn't apply to the end game. What is NOT fun is when you are in HM titan, and you strictly *cannot* kill the heart because someone died and you simply do not have enough damage to kill it quickly enough.

That's what bugs the heck out of me in this game. Other games tend to be like the former. They have fudge room where an exceptional player can shine and make miracles happen. 8 player content can be done with 6 good players or 4 -5 great players. But in this game the later boss fights are so tightly tuned that just one person screwing up often results in a complete failure for the entire team.

It's worth noting that with Titan, you only need the party to survive up to the point of Titan's Heart. Once you clear that, you could basically two-man him if you really wanted. My first clear of HM with my FC, half the players had never cleared HM before, and there was only four of us left for about the final 10% of his HP.

I'd love to put together a group of people from my server who willingly tackle 'really silly' challenges in certain boss fights by ignoring intended methods to reduce the danger (usually AoE-spawning Adds, like the Mithril Verges in Qarn's final boss or Mithril Bits during Praetrium's final boss phase 2)

I was in Crystal Tower once and we had really good groups, we wiped at atomos once cause we didn't have enough dps on the adds, so we just changed it after the wipe and it worked out fine.
And ofcourse when you're in a really good group you're just waiting for that big thing that's gonna ruin it.

So at behemoth at least 9 players died and we still somehow managed to raise everyone and get them to full hp. Tanks died and some dps had to run to the towers, three different main tanks died during the chaos and the feeling was so good when we actually managed to turn it around to our favour again. I love those kinda runs.

Or the ones where you wipe a couple of times at the last boss and then you try something new and it works out. The feeling is awesome

I had a fun one yesterday. Was doing BrayFlox HM and I pulled the first boss for the tank, Well he DCd at the line o.0. I popped Fist of Earth and tanked him, PLD came back and was like "oh you killed it". Yeah easy boss but I like tanking on MNK reminds me of the good ole days in FFXI.
