I agree, I never really get a sense of enjoyment playing giant open-world games with no other players in them. Maybe it's a result of playing MMOs, but it makes them feel dead. Just the knowledge that other people are running about doing their own thing in MMO worlds at the same time as you makes them feel more engaging to me.I like open MMOs. Sandbox ones. I think a linear story-based approach is wrong for an MMO if you actually stop and analyse what an MMO should be.
It's weird because Tanaka always said that he wanted players to play in the same world (no instances) and, also, the old development team put a lot of emphasis on a player-driven economy... so they obviously thought that player-interactions were an important aspect of the MMO genre and philosophy. And yet for some reason they marketed the game as a story-driven MMO (!?). There's an irony there.
Linear stories are no place for an MMO where player-interactions can and should serve as substitutes.
In this sense, Bethesda have the right idea. Their games are more dynamic, and I'm sure an MMO with these game-design principles would be successful because it would play to the inherent strength of the MMO genre.
But, in saying that, I found Oblivion to be very boring as a single-player game. It's no fun playing that type of game by yourself.

i think difference is about speed fixing, in my opinion SE always take so long to fix things, probably too much debug, testing, etc.
With this i mean why we are having not little updates fixing chats, icons, more config options, sound fixes etc and we have to wait larger updates to get them?
They do open world well and have some good writers, that's about it.
Their combat system doesn't change much, they tweak it a bit every game and change a few things. Which some mentioned FFXIV could have done and didn't instead trying to reinvent the base. Pretty sure they get that now and I'm not sure Bethesda is a good example of what to do in development, unless it's supposed to be a lesson on playing it safe.
You take risks and you can fall pretty hard which is what happened here, if only the risks they were taking had come with a little more support whether in more time or man power, maybe things would have been different.
Thing is as players we don't know for sure and I'm not going to take what some guy says in an interview as a perfect representation of how his studio actually functions, sometimes it's accurate and sometimes it isn't.

Sounds to me like Bethesda's approach to Skyrim is the tried and true philosophy of K.I.S.S. "Keep it simple, stupid."

It's pretty clear at this point that they were working on the background for at least half a year before putting out everything they've developed in a short timespan. Everything they say supports this.
So your "results" are bullshit until we see what they have managed to do. 1.18 is the start of it and who knows how many patches are needed to implement everything. The point is, though, that if they implement a years worth of fixes in a span of 6 months, their over-all pace is not "slow".
This may not be the case ,but the fact- the fact is that you nor I do not know what will happen. But what we do know is that this is not bullshit. They haven't given us their everything, and now they attempt to do so.
So sit back and let it unfold.
