US English / UK English Question

Hi there, wonder if it possible for a rep to answer this, but in what circumstances should UK English things be brought up? For example, many of the items in the game originally have UK English versions (Grey and the like) but all the new things being added are localised in the US English (date format, monster names, quest text) and would like to know the policy on such.

Should I report changes/comments along these lines, or only those that would be considered incorrect US English? I'm not too bothered (though Square Enix generally has very nice UK Localisation) as no other MMO (and very few games, even when they are held back months for 'localisation' and not a single word of US English is changed) makes the effort and US English is used more often across the world.

I just mention this as although the forum here is English speaking, only the French/German sides come under 'EU' and of course, the title here is 'Localization' rather than 'Localisation'.

    Thanks for the inquiry.

As we only have one EN client, we are often limited to "one way or the other" when it comes to American English vs British English. And while no disrespect is meant to Final Fantasy FFXIV fans in England, Australia, and other exotic locales where the Queen's English is deftly wielded, for the most part, we have elected to use American English in our localization of the game. That said, this decision hasn't stopped us from tossing in a few British spellings here and there, mostly to enhance characterization or give the game a more archaic, fantasy feel (grey, loverly ladybug, Gates of Judgement, humours, Armoury system are a few examples). As it would happen, our main text editor is British himself, and the good man makes every effort to ensure we do not defile his beautiful language (as I most likely have in the post ).

Interesting stuff. I really like how open and friendly the localization team has been thus far!

Thanks for the response, it is appreciated.

*Edit* Now that I'm home from work, I'll expand on this a bit!

It is interesting to hear, and I assumed that the main language would be US English, but I do like the mix of words. I have to say, I love a lot of the characters in the game - even those you only get a couple of lines out of, so many ooze character (the Lalafell near the Ul'Dah gates who gave the side-quest related to the size of the monsters a personal favourite) and look forward to the excellent word craft in the future!

Anyhow, hope the main text editor can make a stand - the hopes and dreams of this Scottish gamer live through him.
