PS3 noob here with a question on what to focus on....

I could go on and on.... but a very simple question. Playing this game on the PS3 - would a Paladin as my first 50 be reasonable? With someone with a decent head on his sholders - would tanking instances be very difficult?

Friend of mine suggested doing something like Dragoon first to learn the ropes in dungeons then after that lvl 50 do a Paladin.

This a good suggestion or am I just over thinking this and should just jump in the fire and start off with a Paladin as my first Job?

    Thanks guys!

Getting whatever job is your favorite to 50 as your first is viable, don't let others tell you otherwise.

Playing a tank job on PS3 is no issue, at least it hasn't been an issue at all for me when I leveled PLD. So if tanking is what you want to do, definitely go for it. You don't need to learn the duties beforehand (it does help for sure, but part of the fun is learning them for the first time as the job you like most).

The only issues you might run into are people who leave before even trying because the tank isn't "geared enough" (sometimes legitimate, but generally not from my experience). Or if you run into players who flame you for a single mistake (tanks in general take the brunt of the abuse from other players for mistakes, their mistakes are more noticeable and people see them as easy targets).

I say if you want PLD to be your first 50, go for it.

If you enjoy PLD play it first. Tanks are in high demand and you can make sizeable amounts of money doing duty Roulettes as a tank as they are almost always the bonus role.

Just make sure to keep your gear, especially your weapon, up-to-date and you should be fine. All the storyline dungeon mechanics are very intuitive to get a grasp of and if you are ever in doubt you can just search online for guides if you feel like you want to be prepared, which I actually would recommend for stuff post-storyline if you are using the Duty Finder. As long as you let people know early on that you are new in a dungeon typically they will be up for offering advice. It's not hard to get into new parties as a tank anyway so if people bail on you you can just requeue.

Another option is to try and use the Party Finder tool to look for members that are willing to go through a learning run through whatever dungeon you are trying to clear. Since you are a tank you would have the hardest role to find filled already.

I'd say it hugely depends on what you want to do in the game.

I started on PS3 as a PLD (tanking since 2004) and had very little issues, however in the higher-end content you can definitely be a burden. You can mitigate that by "learning" a fight (like counting towers when Titan HM will do plumes and stuff), but at least for my experience (decent pc via LAN, Ps3 via W-Lan, DSL 6k) I can definitely mitigate a ton of damage on my computer that I would take on P3 (thats also the reason I'm not tanking on my PS3 at all anymore).

So you might want to test how good you can dodge AoEs on your PS3 as it might differ for you from my experience

You can easily notice that by trying to "last second evade". When I dodge late on my computer and move just barely outside of the AoE I get hit very very few of the times (like 10% maybe), when I dodge correctly I get hit below 1% I'd say (spikes still hurt you of course^^).
On my PS3 when I do the late-minimum-dodge I easily get hit 50%+ of the time and even when I'm concentrated and act fast I'll at least get hit 10% of the time if not more.

This might be due to WLan though, so test for yourself and you'll see

Also note that not being able to dodge will still be fine in most cases for 4man content, so don't worry too much if you don't wanna go highend content even if you have the same problems I have.

Thanks guys. Going for paladin right off. Love the looks of them and the mechanics of them from watching videos.
