I am against this idea, and they probably wouldn't even consider this for various reasons.

Might be nice if the maps have a "cloud of war" on it at the beginning. You uncover it as you explore the lands.
Makes everyone happy no? No need to buy maps and still provides an incentive to explore.
I'd be happy with this. I was going to suggest it myself.
It's the best of both world. You don't need to purchase a map or find it in a treasure chest but you are being encouraged to explore the whole area if you want to uncover the whole map. This promotes exploring and doesn't hinder people to purchase maps (altho it would be a good gil sink too) or find them in chest or quests (which I would like myself but people doesn't want to work for stuff anymore).
But getting rid of maps that are just given to you at character creation would make the game so much more funner. Especially the current black shroud . . You could get lost in there for hours without a map and teleportation lol.
Black shroud is crazy. Devs would notice a steep incline of people who quit FFXIV after signing on with Gridania.
Though.. TBH I could barely remember my way around... omg im starting to forget the name of the towns... bastok. .sandoria... and.... and and and WHAT IS IT...

There's always fog of war, or whatever the equivalent term is outside RTS games.... Parts of the map become visible when you enter a localized area on the map. However, I don't think that would do us much good, or push people into exploring. Maybe at start until you realize there's nothing special to explore on the current maps. There's not many impressive or different landmarks right now, and even the ones we have currently serve no purpose. No reason to go to so many places on our maps, at all. So much empty space that is not used for leves/gathering/quests/storyline.
I see the world design being the biggest problem here, and not the visibility of maps itself. If the landscape was more interesting, even if I had a fully opened map, I'd still want to visit places that were marked with "weird" icons on my map or seemed intriguing in some way just to witness them with my own eyes and take screenshots or whatever. Right now I'm just demotivated by huge distances of empty space and the fact that so many things look the same per map.
I'm all for fog of war on maps. I do prefer FFXI's map system, but it wouldnt do too well in this game. How about fog of war everywhere apart from when you first start the game, your town is visible and a small radius outside your town is visible on the maps, while everything else is shrouded (this was kinda in FFXI, you start off with maps to your starting area and had to quest or open chests for the rest of the maps around the world which was really fun, but some people will surelly say something like 'oh noes i dont wanna spends my 1 hour a day that i have to log in getting lost blablabla')
Cloud of war like in command & conquer games?
