Cannot Equip This Item: You already posess this Unique Item

I am getting very frustrated with this ridiculous limitation for item use which i do not understand. I am trying to continually upgrade my retainers for their mssions and i can't use items that are just sitting in my inventory unused because I keep getting this stupid notice....

Cannot Equip this Unique Item that you already posses.

what does it mean? i cannot use a cotton cowl lvl 10 on my retainer that is stting unused in my inventory because i may have one equipped on one of my class characters?

Does it mean i wont be able to use dupllicates of ANY items that are in use? if so this is amazingly stupid and frustratting.

Can anyone explain the rules for item use on retainers? thank you ..i am going to go cool off now, for i am very mad about this.

Just keep trying? or put it into your own armoury chest first then right click equip to retainer?
The armoury chest atm is very bugged. You get stupid error messages like "you can only put gear into the armoury chest" while moving gear into the appropriate slot of the armoury chest, or even when just moving items around within one slot.

This might be a long shot but does your retainer have a unique item equipped that is already in your armory chest? If so the game probably isn't able to take it off of the retainer without you getting rid of the copy of the item in your armory chest.

ah ha, Hi Estellios nice to see you still helping people out you were very nice to me in the early days. now that I have two lvl 50 characters i can really appreciate the help you and others gave us.

i guess it may be a bug. I cant figure out why it wont let me use some things ...i dont see any other examples around but i may need to sell or give away dups or just plan to work around stuff that i am using for my characters. it is a bit confusing. i hope they can get some better guidance for us..I like making my retainers as strong as possible. and it pays off. Two days ago one of them brought me a Level 70 relic weapon, the Mog Staff for the Thalmurge..so i am starting a thalmurge class to use it.

It won't let me use items that I have marked as a gear set. So if to have that item in a set you'll have to delete that saved set first.

I believe this message will show when you'll try to equip a "unique" gear time to retainer and that very same items is also stored in the retainer's inventory - try to remove it from there and you should be able to equip it then,
