I was thinking the exact same thing. Every time I have quit a previous MMO, it has been because of a mindless, no skill grind like this.
I don't mind challenging content, but the Atma grind is put there for one reason only... to keep high level players busy.

Why does everyone think that saying theyre gonna quit is gonna scare anybody into changing something? If you are just do it. But im gonna find other things in this game that i like doing in the mean time. Instead of fates

I feel sorry for the people that have bad luck with atma. I farm 12 and now i'm farming again for my SMN which i got 4 of in one day. The wep are not even second best for most jobs you have a long time to do them you don't have to unlock it now.

here's the thing:
I too hate the atma fate grind, however posting it in the forums is just pointless (I hate to sound like an atma supporter but) in the time you are spending hating the grind you could be grinding out the infamous atma you so love to hate!
It took me a week nearly 10-15 hours daily and a few hours here and there to acquire all 12 atma ( in the same time span many other lucky few were getting their 12 left and right as I watched them pass me by) but even though I was soo annoyed grinding and pissed about every fate I completed with no drop I DIDN'T GIVE UP, I told myself I was going to be consistent and when I got bored I did something else! and after whole week I finally got my last atma and upgraded to my atma relic.
Now though I still hated every minute of it and it took zero skill at all to accomplish, my sheer will to keep going and do it because I wanted to get it done was enough to give me a sense of satisfaction and pride as I knew this was something I worked toward and finally finished!
Point is don't let this get you down keep at it and get it done! if you continue to complain and do nothing you will never get anything done and stay in the same place you are in the quest mad that those that are attempting to do it are done (even if they got them within 12 hours or like me a week!)

I'll start off by saying that I absolutely hate this quest line. However, I don't actually entirely agree with either side of the arguments people have been making. I don't think that it is fine the way it is, though.
I'm focusing on Coil, however, it takes forever to get a group together if you don't already have a static. So, I set up party finder, only do Fates while I'm waiting on people, and its made me slightly less irritable (I also got lucky enough to get 4 stones this weekend doing Fates in between Coil turn farming compared to the 2 I've gotten in just straight-up Fate farming, so that also made me less agitated).
The reason I make such a big deal over Atma is because you can upgrade the weapon, and for some of us, there's a long path for a better weapon otherwise (getting through Extremes and Coil; I haven't been having too much luck with drops/groups), so you're really just feeling stuck regardless. Besides, if you choose to go with the dungeon weapons and ignore Atma entirely, who's to say that some stats on the Relics might be better in some situations.
Also, complaining on the forums doesn't mean you've lost any time doing this hated farming; just because you can post on the forums doesn't mean you're also able to play the game (on forums via phone, at work, not at home, etc). Saying complaining on a forum is pointless because you should be doing the grind instead is silly.

If you feel this is the only meaningful content in the game and this was the breaking point for you, I'm going to go on a limb and say you didn't really want to continue playing this game anyway. It's pretty bad to want to find a reason to want to quit. You either like the game or you don't.
It is horrible game design that's why people hate it.
FATEs in general are bad design forcing i90 players to do low level FATEs is even worst.
They could have done this a ton of different ways. Let us get ATMA on any job. Would help people lvl alt jobs. Let us get ATMA from treasure maps as an alternate or from pop NMs. Put them in chest from low level dungeons to help newer players level.
for the rest of us trying to level our alt classes, or in my case, my FIRST class!
when 80 level 50's descend on the fates with their uber gear and fast mounts,
they just obliterate it in 30-60 seconds before ANY of us can get any credit for it!
I keep hearing all the "alternative" ways to level - well what if we like using fates?
But now we're s---d out of them becasue the level 50's grind them in LOW LEVEL AREAS and annihilate them b4 we can get any credit.
s---t, i can't even get my chocobo because the fates are dead b4 i can reach them, and this is true in EVERY ZONE I HAVE ACCESS TO as a level 22, so don't say "go somewhere else" - it's irrelevant, every zone is the same! all you 50's with nothign better to do than blast away fates , i can't even get my d---n mount!
yes, forcing them to do the fates where we, low level players, trying to get our chocobo mounts can't even GET them because 1,000 of you swarm in like flies on s----
and destroy the fate b4 any of us can get any credit! it's so insane.
now, i know that the company cares zilch for my opinion, but i will make my protest financial, and unsubscribe. thanks for the run, ffxiv, you were fun til you ruined it.
i'll be looking for a new game, ty for the fun while it lasted, now it's history - sure $15/month is nothing to you, but I hope enough folks, level 50's and the rest of us, quit over it, so you finally wake up!
