Major Update is every 3 months (if there are no issues to hold it back like what happened to 2.1)

and

we will get 1 expansion every 2 years.

We are hitting 1 year of the timeframe soon so 1st expansion is around mid or later 2015 after 2.4 or 2.5 or 2.6.

Q40: This might be a bit early to ask, but could you tell us any plans for an expansion?

A40: As we just mentioned before about the addition of a new race, we are looking into this for the first expansion, which we would like to release within two years of launch.

It is in this article Yoshi-P announced Major Updates are in a 2.5 month timeframe for their release as well.

Q45: How often are you planning to update the game after the official release of A Realm Reborn? Also, will you be introducing mini-scenarios not tied to the main scenario during these updates?

A45: We are currently planning to introduce major updates once every 2 and a half months. As far as mini-scenario goes, yes, we will be implementing mini-scenarios as well. Gilgamesh, which we introduced earlier, will be introduced through a mini-scenario.

FFXI had a 1-2 year per expansion ( in it's prime of course).

The "We would like to have an expansion out within 2 years from launch" Keyword here is "within", meaning they want to have an expansion out at the latest 2 years, but if we can get it out earlier than that they will.

Yes the Timeframe is certainly within 2 years which is why I did say 1st expansion should be around after 2.4, 2.5 or 2.6 which is within the 1 year to 2 years timeframe.

However, how much they finish is unknown since they did mention 1st expansion content will be big as 2.0 content.

This could imply we are looking at more than just Ishgard, Ala Mhigo, and Sharlayan for new areas and among other things in 1st expansion.

I would say 2.5 before making the ".5" leap to 3.0. If you take into consideration this photo here:



This whole story arc we are playing out is with the primals.

There are 6 Notable Primals on that poster:

1) Leviathan ( Out 2.2)
2) Titan ( Out 2.0)
3) Garuda ( Out 2.0)
4) Ramuh ( 2.3 or 2.4)
5) Ifrit (out 2.0)
6) Shiva (2.3 or 2.4)

We have the Coil for Bahamut, and Odin as a Open world FATE ( which they are on the Poster). There are only 2 more new Primals to introduce ( Shiva and Ramuh).

They said there will be a new primal per patch ( with story mode and Extreme mode).

There are 2 more primals left so there are only 2 more patches till all primals are out ( 2.3/2.4). Then most likely 2.5 (maybe 2.6) will be the final events that occur pre-expansion.

If it Expansion comes out after patch 2.5 (which will release sometime probably around December) the release date will be somewhere around March 2015 if it's 2.6 (less likely to me) Release date will be somewhere around June 2015.

My bets on March 2015.

Same but the 2.2 story end does hint to what one of the 2.X storyline will be about with the word "Revolution" which changed my assumption that we may fight the next Primal in 2.3

I'm currently guessing now we may have a break on fighting primals in 2.3 and get involved in this Revolution in 2.3 story then we fight Ramuh in 2.4 and 2.5 will be Shiva so they set the stage of 1st expanion making Shiva's defeat the reason why the Higher ranks in IShgard is willing to open Ishgard's gates to outsiders so they can meet the Hero or Heroine who defeated Shiva in 2.5 story in the first part of 1st expansion storyline but this is just a assumption based on what is left and current state of Ishgard since they still need a very good reason to cause the higher ranks (the Inquisition leader and their Pope) of Ishgard to go against their Isolation Act on Ishgard in 1st expansion.

However, they could get the next Primal involved with this Revolution having a Major Patch storyline covering the Revolution in one part and the Primal (Ramuh or Shiva) as the other part of the story. The Primal part of the Major Update story has currently been quite small having only cover about a few quests while the majority of the quests involve another story that sets the stage for 1st expansion storyline and content.

I haven't beaten to 2.2 storyline yet ( doing other things). I do feel that FFXIV ARR 1st expansion may get a trailer ( even if it's a small one) at this year's E3, since this E3 will probably be the only E3 they get to show it off before it's released. ( Not to mention Yoshi-P loves going to all kinds of events even small ones for some reason lol). Which makes it all the more likely for it to occur :P.
