Whether or not Coil is more challenging, is not a point I was trying to debate. I made no points about the content of the Relic Upgrade quest, only the system behind it which is proving so contentious. I am strictly talking about RNG.Except that in Coil farming, if you complete the Turn, you are guaranteed that something will drop. It may not be something you want, and even if it is you may not get it, but there is a 100% drop rate in Coil. This is very different, psychologically, than doing something that seems to have about a 2% drop rate. Granted, when it does drop, it is always the thing you want and you don't have to compete for it, but the two are not the same at all.
The other part of it is that Coil is much more satisfying. It's a clearly defined experience. You go, you do it (and it's significantly more challenging than FATEs any day), something drops, and it's over. I suppose technically FATEs are the same, but they don't feel the same. You're running around a zone spamming skill 1 and skill 2 because you can't access anything else, and as soon as one FATE ends (and yeah, you get gil and seals and maybe some low level crafting mats but so what?) you have to run to the next one. I suppose on a purely mechanical level it's the same as spamming a Coil turn for loot, but psychologically the two are very different. It's kinda like the difference between running on a treadmill (what FATEs feels like) and playing laser tag (what Coil feels like). One is actually fun, and the other you mostly do because you have no choice if you want the reward.
That said, I'm not exactly spending my life on Atma to the exclusion of all else. I've done 31 hours of farming since the patch, and I'm 3/12. I would just greatly prefer it if there was an end in sight, that I could have some idea of when I'll be able to complete it, and luck was removed so that the grind was equal for everyone.
