Quests, Gear and confusing Maps/porting system

I am a conjurer, and am level 9 and new to FFXIV. I am in my starting city, but seem to have run out of quests to do in that city. I have one quest left on my log, which is to get all level 5 gear on me....i have some level 5 gear but dont know where else to get it besides i found the player market and they charge sky high prices for my level. Any ideas?

Second thing is that when i goto a blue crystal, do i just have to memorize where its going to take me cause the different quarter names you port to are very confusing to remember. There are some ports where its plane and you know where you are going like the conjurer's guild. But most ports within the city have really whacky names. Any way to find out where your going without having to memorize all these names?

I seriously don't understand the maps either...ive looked up youtube videos and still can't get a grasp on them.

Check NPC vendors for your low level gear. I believe there's one close to where you turn in that quest.

Aethernets in Ulda and Gridania are a bit confusing. limsa Lominsa is a bit more obvious. Other than looking at your map there no way to tell. But after spending enough time in the city of your choice you'll start to memorize them.

Also when you get to level 10 pickup a gathering and maybe a crafting class. Crafting can save/make you a lot of money.

I've only been playing for a month so the confusion is still fresh in my mind. Once you get a grasp of of things the game really flows.

Oh and try to stay up to date on your main quest. It will guide you to zones and help keep you geared.

In Gridania the main shops are near the leatherworkers aetheryte. You can also get there by running north east from the main aetheryte (and zoning) or going south from the lancers guild. There should be a battlecraft supplier or armorer. The level 5 gear quest unlocks a bunch of the next stuff.

It just takes time to get used to the maps.

Are you doing main quest? The one with the meteor icon? Also accept quests in the Gridania's inn that take you out of town, there will be more low level quests. Did you do level 5 Conjurer quest? It takes you to the North Shroud, there are also low level quests.
But before you leave the town I advice you to buy a 1 hi-potion (should be cheap on market board) and level 8 (or 5 if you are saving gil) pants from a vendor since there will be a gear check in the story quite soon. All other pieces can be obtained from quests.
You get used to the aetheryte system quite fast in your starting city, no worries.

As suggested, keep up with your main quest line and class/job quests. These quests will gear you up to at least level 20-30 gear. I only recently went to the market boards to purchase my first hq level 42 gear. Biggest mistake I have made was not keeping up with my main quest line, now I am like 35 levels behind in my main quests cause I did too many side quests and farmed early level dungeons for gear too much. Main thing is to have FUN and try not to get too frustrated with the maps.
