I don't think anyone cares if you trace. Lots of people trace. The problem is making money off of it.

I don't know anything about Japanese copyright or work-for-hire laws, but Yamashita - although an independent artist - has been an employee of Squenix and Bamco in the past. The last thing you want to do is take commission on drawings that are strikingly similar to originals owned by international corporations.

I was pretty much going to type up something similar to this but you beat me to it, I'm fairly certain most people here don't mind that you're tracing/being inspired by anothers art just don't charge people for something like this, that said I think it is nice of you to do these requests for people I just wish they would take it to another thread as I have seen about 20 of these requests and it's kinda annoying.

But let me just say that I've never traced anything.

Just wanted to share what I found since I also don't like art theft.
I don't mind people using other people's art as reference to learn "how professionals do it" but I don't like people saying "I don't trace" when it really looks like they did.

Had you said, "Okay, I traced these to improve my drawings, and here are some I did which sadly aren't as good yet..." I wouldn't have mind then but you said that...

I partially agree. Tracing is fine, it's a way to learn drawing and develop your own style.
However, going around and making people think the art is yours is not okay, even if you're not making money with it.

I would have been willing to change my mind about a trace or two, but not after the person actually said "I've never traced anything!" when they obviously have.

Well, yeah. Tracing and then lying about your work's authenticity is a different kind of wrong.

But, these days, it's not like anyone has the time to pore over work you misrepresented as genuine and put it into an animated .gif comparing it to the original. You could probably get away with it.

(Which wouldn't bother me in the slightest, it partially ruined the thread for me because it increased the amount of people asking for art... not that it's bad to request art but they could just make another thread for that)

Haha aww, why thank you, glad you think so! My friend actually re-touched the drawing for me and added a simple background that day so here is the "improved version" ^_^
