Fun fact! The game's old engine, while rendering the game absolutely beautifully at the character scale, was absolute garbage when it came to scaling. On a whim I decided to turn down every single setting to the absolute lowest.
It was impressively bad. These are completely unaltered, by the way.

I actually had to play 1.0 on the absolute lowest settings because I was playing on a laptop (this was a time when I did not have a proper PC and hadn't built my current rig). It was a blurry, pixelated mess and I could barely tell what I was looking at half the time. I'm glad I only played for a month or so before I gave up on that headache.Fun fact! I miss this and materials not being a smoothed washed out surface. Neutral mobs would walk over and stare at you doing whatever you were doing.
That isn't really anything related to the engine. You changed the setting controlling the internal frame buffer to the lowest. Meanwhile many players were turning it up to so the game was rendering 1920x1080 at 3840x2160 (4K) and complained the game ran poorly, several even tried to throw AA on top of it. Barely anyone playing with it had any idea what it did, 99% of games don't even expose it to be changed.Fun fact! Ha! Thank you all very much! Coerthas used to be ridiculously gorgeous! And you guys are right; the textures for clothing and armor used to be waaay better. I wonder why they didn't leave them in as a 'Ultra High Quality' graphics mode or something?
EDIT for Question: How were the zones different back then? Where they bigger?
EDIT: I can't post any more today? I've reached my daily limit or my MAIN CHARACTER isn't high enough level? WTF is that all about?

The zones were quite a bit different. Basically everything was seamless. In Limsa Lominsa, you'd run the entire length of the bridge and be inside "middle la noscea," near Bearded Rock. You'd run on foot up to Skull Valley/Aleport, could keep going from a path near Skull Valley up towards Bronze Lake (wasn't a lake back then) or to Iron Lake (was beautiful, no Kobolds except up a ways on the eastern side of the lake). They were still discrete zones, and basically everyone learned to wait a few seconds when passing through one of the invisible zone lines because it always took a second or two for the mobs to appear on your screen. Many an adventurer has died zoning in to the old Moraby Bay area and finding a newt spawn on top of them out of the blue.Ha! Thank you all very much! Coerthas used to be ridiculously gorgeous! That was part of the problem though. Because the maps were so huge (they were seriously huge) and because there were all connected with no loading screens between them, the devs had to copy paste a bunch of features. La Noscea had this one double rock hill thing that was EVERYWHERE.
I still miss it though. Coerthas was my absolute favourite. I hope and pray that Riversmeet came out alright.

Curious. Do you think they broke it up like they did for the PS3? Other games I've played are (mostly) seamless (WoW, Lineage II, LotRO - those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head), so I'm not sure why this one would be so limited. That was part of the problem though. According to them, it was the only way to make each zone interesting/not copypasted everywhere. I think it's also because of the PS3. Yoshi himself has said it has memory issues.
Kidvideo, it's winter now in Coerthas because someone at SE wanted a snowy zone :\. It was so pretty before.
Why is it winter now in Coerthas?
