I could see them implementing this some time in the future but I highly doubt this is something most players really care too much about. I never bothered with the FFXI companions and I wasn't the only one.

Even if most players won't utilize an npc companion in the future, people like me would : / my LS members rarely seem to be on anymore, as well as my actual friends who used to play the same time I did. In other words, I'm running around solo a lot.
A companion running by my side would make me happier! (unless of course a summon/dragoon/pet-type class comes out later..)
But umm yeah in the mean time I would like to summon my companion!!
Saw this post and was just thinking.
Just got to try out raid for first time today and it was alot of fun but i worry will not always be able to get a party for them.
So why not add choice to do the raid with your npc or a band or npcs.
Ok so maybe some will say online game should be done with others.
I prefer that too but cant always find other to help when i want try out the content in game.
Really the raid was great and thanks to the other players that party up with me today for that.
Maybe make it you only get item rewards if do with party of players as opposed to npcs so that the rewards are only for people that party up together.
I would not mind this as i more intrested in doing the content itself and know lots players intrested in rewards and linkshell focused play but i not that type of player.
