What Thaliss said - also, Retainers can't gather anything you haven't got checked-off in your own gathering log. They're more like the gatherer version of Quick Synthesis than a replacement for levelling a gathering class properly.

Really you have to gather the item first yourself before the retainer can? Was this in the patch note? I might have missed it.

I found it out the hard way with La Noscea Orange seeds.

Also, so far my Retainers can only gather what's obtainable with the main-hand tool, so only from the yellow logging/mining nodes. I've got a level 15 botanist and a level 15 miner and as of yet they can't get me anything from the blue harvesting/quarrying nodes.

ETA: both my retainers are in the best HQ gear they can wear for their level, so stats shouldn't be an issue either.

ETA2: Just to clarify this is only for the directed gathering ventures, not for the exploration ventures.

Might seem an obvoius question but - have you equipped them with the second hand tools?

I'm hoping at this point that it's just something that'll unlock when I get them to a higher level.
