Choosing Retainer Venture Class

Yeah you CANT gather things you haven't gotten your self. I found out the hard way having to take out my rusty Pole to send my retainer fisher on a quest venture

The list of items they can harvest doesn't include all the items you have harvested yourself. I was hoping my retainer could get some Lominsan Anchovies to make some more Fishmeal, but even though I've caught that fish myself, it's not on his list. He does have the right level gear on and mostly HQ. So I'm not sure what's going on here. So don't get excited over Fullmoon Sardines and Apkallu eggs, they may not be on his list.

The higher-level expeditions require a minimum iLevel for DoW/DoM retainers, that may be what they meant.

Yes I have seen that you need ilvl requirements to do field explorations at 5-10-15 etc

But there have been speculations that HQ gear on retainers as well as making them have the highest ilvl possible also yield better rewards, would be nice to have confirmation

That's not a "speculation" but fact clearly stated in the 2.2 patch notes:

- Retainer Gear
Retainers can be equipped with gear befitting their assigned class and level, which will in turn affect items procured on their venture. Items will be procured in increased quantities by increasing either average item level for Disciples of War and Magic, or gathering rating for Disciples of the Land. Moreover, for retainers set as Disciples of the Land, increasing perception will result in a higher likelihood of obtaining high-quality items.
