Yup i belive that to be the best solution, leave it up to the players to decide what's worth buying and what's not based on every factor, price, condition, color etc...I thought I read something about SE wanting players to sell gear regardless of it's current condition. They always talked about players selling gear at different prices because of multiple variables involved with the item, like condition, materia, color, they even had a system they talked about where you could customize your equipments appearance. That was the original point of the market wards right? Being able to sell gear for the price you feel is right by examining all the variables you put into the item.
After thinking about it for a few minutes, I tend to agree with the OP. I like the idea suggested about one buying old equip, repairing, and reselling as a viable money-making opportunity.
The only issue I would see is the outcry of whining if they don't know what the current item condition is until they reach the retainer. That's just one more piece of information that would have to be added to the search function. Not all that hard to do, but a necessary step.
I liked how when I want to get an item repaired, I can't accidently sell something worth millions of gil for 1k. I don't see why, when repairs are so easy and cheap to get, it would be that much of a problem to ensure the buyer always gets an item that is 100% ready to go.

Sorry i don't see how this system protects you from anything, you can sell something at low price by mistake after you repair it anyway, as any other item in the game that is not gear. Repairs may be easy to do i haven't even looked into it, what i'm saying is for example you buy a piece of gear and by chance you find youserlf a better piece of gear for that slot quickly and you wanna have your money back quickly for the piece of gear that is no longer of use to you, but then you can't sell it because it's a 99%, so you have to waste your time looking for someone to repair that 1% or learn to do it yourself, it's just a big timesink is allI liked how when I want to get an item repaired, I can't accidently sell something worth millions of gil for 1k. Well, someone has to fix the equipment. It's either a waste of time on your end or a waste of time on their end. SE chose a waste of the seller's time which is just as good/bad as a waste of the buyer's time. If SE has chosen the other, you'll be here complaining from the other end of the deal.
Because of the way this works, I scarcely use the market wards to sell any gear at all. Rather, I just NPC it, even though I'm aware it's sometimes at a significant loss.
Off-Topic kind of:
You know it occurs to me that the Mender's Ward is utterly useless, even if it were being used to some extent for its true purpose it's full of overflow retainers... and so, practically speaking, it may as well not exist.
Yes...good thought. Although the better option might be to dismiss retainers from the ward that no longer have an item relevant to that ward on them for sale/repair.
