I'm sorry, did you just say FFXI did it differently then RNG? I don't know, I only played the first 6 years or so, but I do recall getting your sub job unlocked was a huge RNG process with a small amount of mobs to kill with some only spawning at night. Same with unlocking summoner, oh and just about every single NM worth anything was camped with 5-10 botters who would claim it 99% of the time and sell the drop for 2 mil, and even if you DID get it.. the chance of most good drops were around 5-10%.

Right, so Me farming 2 days got me my Atmas, where as it took me approx 2-3 months to get my leaping boots, and I spent a year or so attempting to get the cloak that regened MP, and never got it.... so yeah. RNG was a bit worse there. Take off the nostalgia shades.
