As far as the "failed fate, can you still get the item still?" question, from the NPC you start te quest, he does say something about needing to defeat the enemy to get this atma aether wielding the weapon. So for boss fates, it'd make sense you would not get an atma if it failed.

Also, I've never gotten anything from a failed fate except some experience and gold, boss or no boss.

So it could be assumed logically that you would have no probable chance of getting a drop from a failed fate. It'd be great if the devs could comment on this particular point, too. (Hint, hint.... )

So I have gotten the atma weapon and finish one of the books and got Int+2. The book is still in my key inventory even when finished, is it safe to discard it now?

I would honestly hold onto it for now until we know for certain, but I'll add this question to the list.

Yeah, you get to choose what upgrade you want at a time. The book I choice is call skyfire or was it skyfall, not log on so can't check it. But they give you a list of upgrades for BLM it was int,vit and det.

Q: Being a Paladin, do I need to equip both the Zenith Sword and Shield to obtain Atma?

A: No, you only need the Zenith Sword to be equipped in order for Atma to drop. However it should be noted that you will not be able to fully complete the quest unless you also have your Zenith Shield. So if you skipped out on upgrading the Shield earlier due to a better upgrade, now would be the time to upgrade it.

Has this actually been confirmed? Would like to know since I do have a zenith sword but not a zenith shield.

Yes, was mentioned on Reddit of a guy complaining that he had never upgraded his Relic Shield because he had a Primal Shield instead, and couldn't complete the quest, even though he had all the Atma required.
