This was actually brought up to Yoshida recently as something that players have been looking forward to seeing, when he was told about the request he gave a simple "Got it!" in response. As for the direction they're moving towards, it'll be as mentioned above, a way to buy back previously (and accidentally!) sold items from vendors.

Awesome, it really is a sensible feature that would be very nice to have in those oh sh!t circumstances.

Next thing youll know is pple will want a 'save your progress or reset' button in case they fail leves or something other. Cause basically the buy back is a merchant reset button. >.>
