no one seems to know...
Add me to the list of people who can't figure out what's going on with the new macro icon menu. I was honestly thrilled to see the pet action icons added to the list of available macro images… except they don't seem to be available. /micon "Whispering Dawn" ie makes the blank M icon show up on the bar. Worse, the old icons aren't available to set manually either, so I can't even set them to another skill icon. I'd have to use another skill icon on my class (ie /micon Leeches) and have it not only look like a duplicate, but display the wrong cd information etc.
It's a travesty.
would be nice to get an explaination of this from the devs
I'm having trouble with this too, I can't even use the emote icons which were listed as available in the patch notes.

For anything that isn't an action skill, you have to add the type to the /micon line.
So, for example:
Whispering Dawn: /micon "Whispering Dawn" pet Eos
Dance Emote Icon: /micon "Dance" emote
You can use all skill icons as /micon, but they will only show as such on your actionbar when you are on the corresponding class/Job or on a class/Job that can cross-skill it. On any other class, they will revert to the M as soon as you touch them. (If you don't do anything with them, the icon sometimes stays visible though, just grayed out.)
Also, all /micons will show only as the M in the macro interface.
Ah thanks, that's really helpful. For anything that isn't an action skill, you have to add the type to the /micon line.

Also keep in mind there are two seperate ways to put an image on a macro. The one you're all talking about is /micon or /macroicon - when you use this method, you will get a blank M UNLESS you are able to use the ability. So, for instance, if you /micon "Blizzard II" as an ACN, but don't have that equipped as an Additional Ability, it will be an M. If you add it as one of your additional abilities, it will show the proper icon.
The other way to put a specific image on a macro is to right-click the macro on the "User macros" page and choose to change the macro image. This will give you the full list of icon images, and whichever one you pick will always be active regardless of your class or whether you can use the ability.
Unlike /micon, however, selecting your own icon image means that you don't get any of the active animations for that icon. For example, if you choose the "Cure II" image, it will not get the flashing dashed border whenever Freecure is active. The "Mercy Stroke" image will not light up when an enemy target's HP is under 25%. For abilities on cooldown, you won't see the cooldown clock.
/micon is functional, but limited in when you can use it. Selecing an icon is unlimited, but always a static image.
Unfortunately they changed the icon list, such a small selection now.![]()
