What does having less people on fates making you unable to do it? I do most of them alone, with my Choco..
Don't give up; take it as a change from Brayflox HM, and you'll be fine. I'm halfway through it, excited!
FATEs die significantly (every few seconds) faster in a large group than they do alone (3-5 minutes.) With a chance of 2.5%, you need to generate dozens of rolls to make any reasonable progress, be extremely patient, or be extremely lucky. The number and types of FATEs you can do also significantly decreases - level 40+ boss fates are impossible alone.
So let's estimate that a group clears FATEs about 100-200x as fast, then do some severe correction via the respawn timer - where previous players took one hour to average out around 200 rolls for an Atma, let's say you are taking one hour to average maybe 50 rolls for an Atma. Rough estimate.
Where people took 60 hours to get their Atma, people now will take up to 240 because of how the system works.

Good to know. In that case, go do other FATEs and come back, and engage when there is only a minute or two left and you will get the credit.

Waiting for a fate to end takes 15 minutes for it to time out, as opposed to taking five minutes to clear it. It's suboptimal unless you have at least 3-5 FATEs present to tag for contribution. This is all opposed to the ten seconds it took for a zerg to clear one when the quest was new. It's not "smart" and it's certainly not any "faster" like many people make it out to be. It's just an effort saver (that is also, frankly, much slower than just clearing the FATEs yourself - up to three times slower!) The main benefit is that you get to spend more time watching TV and less time watching your pretty but dull game window.
e: While it's unlikely, we also don't know how contribution or fail/success actually affects Atma droprate, only that it is possible to receive an Atma while bronze-failing a FATE.
Probably the worst element of solo FATE farming for Atmas is zones that have Notorious Monster fate spawns in them. Oh boy, Lazy for You spawned! There's 30 minutes an extra FATE is blocking any number of other, actually productive FATEs to do.

u also don't get atma drop from fail fate.. meaning u need to success.. with no 1 doing.. u hit and running = no one to complete it.. pointless no?

Well... In Eastern Shroud, it isn't exactly impossible but some of the higher level fates are exceedingly difficult to do on your own such as Too Lazy for You. Mainly boss fates though. Sucks soloing them.
I still dont have all my atma. The atma fate grind fighting against the RNGmonster has just completely turned me off from doing much of anything. I am mostly disappointed that after 3+ weeks and several threads about people not liking atma fate's RNG that SE has chosen not to respond at all to the portion of their customer base that is dissatisfied. They have responded to several other less critical posts but not this one. Yes i know some people are happy with it but many are not. A lot of the people I know who were able to get all of their atma quickly realize they only did so because they lucked out with the RNG but still admit it is a dismal system to drag out content and is not equally fair to the player base.
I grinded six non stop hours at Horizon and did not get the Atma. I think six hours should have proved my willingness and dedication to the Atma grind, and if nothing produced in six hours, something isn't right. I do sincerely hope SE will adjust the drop rate or change the Atma quest completely to something more engaging and fun.
