Thread: Receiving emails in mandarin.

Today during maintenance I started receiving emails in mandarin on an account solely used for ffxiv. I have never visited a Gil seller site, spoken to a Gil seller or used this address for anything else. I have heard of this happening in other mmos when there is a light security breach.

It has me rather concerned as I'm stuck at work for another 6 hours.

Has anyone else had this happen or have any idea just how concerned I should be?

Are you sure its Mandarin and not Japanese?
Square has sent out emails in Japanese to non Japanese addresses before.
If you post the text we or I could tell you what language its in.
Unfortunately I have removed my IME but here is some Japanese text.

マージャン this is katakana, this word in particular is Majong. チャーハン Some more katakana.
Here is Hiragana ひらがな this is Hiragana in Hiragana.
Kanji will appear the same for the most part in either language, although the Chinese us many more Kanji than the Japanese. The meanings in Japanese are different.
However to know if the email is in Mandarin or Japanese, look to see if there are any Hiragana or Katakana characters mixed in. If there are than it is Japanese and not Chinese.

Fortunately with advent of cut and paste, google and it having one line in English stating its an add for Chinese books. That was the first thing I verified. I'm concerned about phishing as I have not visited anything related to Chinese language, culture or what have you.

Sorry for being vague. My breaks are frequent but rather short. It states nothing about ffxiv or Gil but given the large virtual currency industry in china and no past instance of this situation in 15 years of mmo dedicated emails it felt safer to ask around.
