I'm not sure why people stay logged in anyways. As far as I know you don't even have to re-enter your password or anything, just click on your character. There's no benefits to staying logged in, it just kills your hardware faster. It's not 2.0 where if you log out, you'll never be getting back in.

It seems to be a holdover from something people did in FFXI. Lots of people like to apparently leave their character logged in 24/7, so they don't miss anything and can review what happened in chat/tells whenever they get back. I don't really see the point either.

Well seeing as they dont have that feature in and dont sell items from personal inventory but have retainers to do that.

So, why stay logged in 24/7?

People are just lazy if they don't log out ever, it's not complicated.

Personally I'll stay logged in all day but I might only play a couple of hours. I frequently go AFK for long periods to clean the house, go to the shops, etc. I'll be using this new feature.

Though I do not do it overnight or when I leave my apartment...when I'm around home I will stay logged in just for the background noise of Lavender Beds to echo throughout my home. It's kind of nice, as I am not a city person and grew up in a quiet place in a farm town. Unfortunately for my job, I am forced to be in a city environment for the time being. This is the reason I like to leave my character afk sometimes when I'm doing other things.

That, and if I'm needed by LS / FC friends, they can just /tell me and I'll be right there ready to go for them.

It's a bad habit some people get from other MMOs.

I have it too, I know it's useless, I know people will talk to me and say "oh he's afk, why's he online then?".
I just don't think about it when I leave the PC...a bad habit from other MMOs where you have either long queues or it's in your best interest to stay online etc.

i'm most ly only then logged in when i lay down a bit and fall alseep (sitting 5 1/2h for raiding is quite uncomfortable after a while) or when i be short at the store buying something.

So i like that little change. it's then more clearly who is afk and who not. Maybe we see it also then via a Chat-Tag aswell who is afk.

I'm kind of surprised that you say this, given that (at this moment) your character avatar is wearing a mining helmet.

My primary reason for leaving myself logged in without doing anything for long stretches of time, is because I'm mining a specific unspoiled node. They can only be mined once per hour, and shutting down the system and turning it on again every hour is arguably more damaging to the hardware than just letting it run (not to mention the whole login process is kind of a nuisance). So, I'll place myself near where the nodes pop and then do other stuff around the house, returning only to mine a node and then leaving again.

Another reason folks would be logged in for long periods of time are if they are waiting for specific infrequently spawning FATEs for their Atma book. They'll plop themselves down in the appropriate spot and then wait sometimes as long as six hours for the FATE to spawn. They could spend this time farming other FATEs, but a lot of the time there's little point to that, so might as well clean up around the house or whatever.

There's probably a host of other good reasons to be logged in but not doing much, but these are two examples off the top of my head.
