Upon further digging, the new crafter head piece is not crafted, and still doesn't have materia slots.

It requires 10 each of the 11+10 shard recipes (Spruce Plywood, Darksteel Hook, Darksteel Wire, Rose Gold Gear, Gryphonskin Strap, Silver Brocade, Spirits of Salt, Spicy Tomato Relish)

All this for a piece that has Control+3 over a fully melded (Craftsmanship+4, Control+5) job specific head piece

The tool upgrades will take 50 of the 11+10 shard recipes for that craft, and give 32 Craftsmanship and 17 Control over the ilvl55 items

No crafted i90 accessories = epic fail

Well, to be fair, it's better to say all this for a piece that has Control+3 over EIGHT fully melded job specific head pieces.

Given that the high requirements of the new recipes are going to require a lot of melding and materia prices are going to shoot through the roof, going for this headpiece may actually be more economical if you're an all-around crafter (rather than focusing on a specific craft).
