Why add a basement to small houses instead of a 2nd floor?

Apparently the basement is to ensure S houses can build undergound workshop as M and L houses.
Just curious why it is not in place since day1.

But, well, somehow I'm more into things that would also work in reality.
I wouldn't put a bath tub or a kitchen into a room with no windows, I'd be afraid the walls would get moldy in no time. xD
I just think it's a little weird to puch such things into a basement.
You know those laundry rooms in the basements of some apartment houses? I wouldn't want to live in such a room. ^^'

At least three of our characters are Keepers of the Moon Miqo'te and it's been said that they like the dark, so we'll probably use the basement as a bedroom, there's no other option I guess.

the plots we considered buying have already been bought we got the small one after all.

Last time I've checked (about 2 days ago) there was tons of medium plots left in all 3 housing areas on Moogle. Do you know that there is five areas for each state, right? So unless you've picked one particular plot and wanted in first housing area I seriously doubt they all sold out ...

We didn't want to buy ANY plot, e. g. not one directly at the street.
We bought one in ward 5 eventually, so yes, we know that there are more wards than 1. ^^
But the medium plot we wanted in the Gridania area was sold out in every ward, but well, it was the best one after all. ^^

Does everyone of you think a basement is a better idea than a second floor? What do you think?

I don't mind the basement. I have a two-person FC too and the basement is going to be more of a library area although I haven't completely decided yet. I know what you mean trying to make it into a home for your characters though since we kinda have the same goal.

I agree with you, but I actually feel like small FC houses don't deserve a second floor since they aren't worth nearly as much. The more you pay the more floors you get after all. Just like they all now have basements, they too should have an attic if that's the case. That's just me though.

It does make me feel like I have a ghost living in my inaccessible attic since there's mysterious lights on at night in what looks like... well... an attic... according to my roof's design lol. XD

The mysterious lights on in the non-existent attic annoy me far more than they should. Can we at least install a sky-light, like in the inn rooms in Limsa, to explain what's going on there?

I wouldn't mind an attic, though. Heck, I wouldn't mind paying a permit to get an attic, I'm sure we can find another half million gil somewhere.

If you want to get technical a cottage is 3 by 3. Adding a second floor would be 3 by 3 where as the basement is 3 by 5... Which is actually better?
