Why add a basement to small houses instead of a 2nd floor?

Hi!

The small houses are high enough to have a 2nd floor. What's supposed to be above the ceiling anyway? Just air? xD
We don't really understand why a basement is added instead of a 2nd floor when they look big enough from the outside.

After we read the small houses would get a basement we planned to save for a medium house but now that all the plots we considered buying have already been bought we got the small one after all.
But we really don't know what to do with that basement (when it comes). Who'd really want to live in a windowless room? We can use it as a storage room but the only thing you can use as storage is the free company chest.
(Yes, the medium and large houses also have basements, but you don't really have to live in them because there's enough room in the upper floors)

If there are any other people that actually like bright rooms - what are you planning to do with your basements in your small houses? ^^

I think basement can be fitted for various use :
- secret war councel room
- bedroom/dorm/ relaxing aea
- playing ground
- craft area, especially with the new furnitures coming in 2.2

I really think furnitures and decoration can make a basement into an enjoyable plce

My FC uses our house as not a living place, but as a headquarters. Main floor is our lounge area, where we got our bar and sitting place. The basement for us, is going to serve as our war room, and possibly even have a sickbay included, just depends on how big the basement is.

I understand that there are a lot people that always have heavy curtains in front of their windows in real life because no one seems to like the light, haha. ^^
And I know this is only a game ... but I couldn't relax or sleep in a basement.
A "war councel room" could be an option for people who like stuff like that.
But we're more into decorating a home for our characters (we're a two person FC with alt characters) and you can't even put flowers in a basement. Ok, actually you could, but who would do that? xD

I'm planning on making my basement into a workplace and kitchen. Forge, armorcraft, woodworking and so on in a seperate room. Culinary and alchemy as a kitchen in the other room. Top floor will be the sleep/relaxation stuff. Just need to be creative. And if you really don't like it, keep saving for a M-sized house. Or wait until S-E adds more wards.

Adding a second floor would mean needing to reflect that on the exterior, which is (presumably) a lot more work.

I am so looking forward to the basement =D I refused to put a hot tub in our FC small house cause it just took up too much space! The basement will be perfect for it =D OFC, our house is empty of all but items that will be lost if we remove them atm as we don't want anything to glitch and get lost when they update.
