Originally, they said classes would be better suited for solo content...but that really didn't play out. Partly because there's really not much advantage to more cross class skills, and partly because what little solo content there is, is pretty dang easy.

I used classes while soloing in pre-ARR as opposed to never in ARR. If I recall correctly, jobs weren't straight up stat-boosts across the board like they are now. If I was a Lancer, I'd have more HP but less strength. But since a DRG was for parties, you'd give up the HP for extra damage.
