Know what is useless? Your Class.

The Disciples of War and Magic are all useless after you upgrade to a job. No one plays them (at least from what I've seen). There is no reason/need for them. When we get to 30 we all go from having a class to the job (or jobs for arcanist) and never look back.

What I think we need is something, a trial or dungeon of some sort where it will be needed to play your class over your job. It would add a little bit of something that we can do with our class then just stick a soul stone to it and call it a day.

I feel ( even though it will take quite a few balancing changes) to just abolish the class system and transfer all abilities from Class--->Job.

You are right most ( if not all just use their jobs).

You could just enquip your soul stones and have it. Some friends and I did that for CT one night. We had to swap out our relic weapons, but still had allagan armor and such to make the min ilevel needed.

Classes are not supposed to be used over jobs.

Think of it as this. Your class is the base and your job is the specification of that class. It's kind of hard to see it that way because every class so far only has 1 specification. for example:

A Archer has the jobs: Bard, Ranger, Hunter and Sniper.
A Marauder has the jobs: Fighter, Dark Knight, Warrior, and Soldier.

This game is supposed to have a lot of jobs, I think Yoshi said at one point, he wants all the jobs from Tactics advance into ARR.

Due to most level 50 job abilities it's kinda hard going back to your class.

Since I don't like Dragoon I might just revert back to Lancer.

However, if you are to use your class, you can throw in some variety into your skill set you couldn't use otherwise on your job. Like an Archer using Cure. Or Marauder using Raging Strikes.

All I am saying, we need something to jump out of the cut and paste system that we have with our Jobs. I want a challenge that we have to use a class instead.

But I do agree they designed themselves into a corner with the class system.

It's way too specific and the current jobs are too similar to the base class. They did a decent job with Arcanist going into Scholar, but for a class like Gladiator, it makes it unnecessarily complicated to turn it into a job that isn't a tank.
IMO they should move a lot of the class abilities and traits to jobs and abandon the whole "1 job skill every 5 levels" template. That way the classes are more generic and the jobs more specific.

What's the point of a specialization if there is only a linear progression of your existing class? The only class with specializations is the Arcanist.

Yeah, classes are pretty much pointless. Every now and again, you hear a story about the BLM who went THM to a low-level dungeon and saved everyone with Raise and Stoneskin or whatever, but for the most part the stat boosts, exclusive gear, and Job-specific abilities are just too good to trade off.

It seems pretty likely that at at least some point in the design process, SE intended class vs job to be a serious choice of versatility vs dedication to a role - but somewhere along the way they adopted something more similar to FFI's class change - so much advantage that while you COULD pass on it, doing so would be highly detrimental.

I WOULD like to see classes become a viable option, but it would take quite a lot of work to pull that off!

It looks as though they considered it at some point, then ran like hell in the other direction ever since like rouletting PHaros Sirius: "Too hard, i'm leaving". What's sad is that the crude, half-arsed cross-classing stuff that remains only reminds us that 'class versatility' was supposed to be something that existed at some point, but it's never going to emerge as anything useful.

That's something to put on the shelf alongside "DOH/DOL endgame content" and "Alternate Jobs for non-arcanists"
