? It just makes your computer recognize a PS3 controller (which it does not recognize on its own) as an Xbox controller (which it does recognize). The buttons work exactly the same and you don't have to mess around with anything. I think you are confused.
Unless something changed recently, at least on Windows 7, the PS3 controller buttons won't actually work unless you install 3rd party drivers. The "Type" thing just changes the button displays on the UI to Playstation buttons instead of Xbox buttons. All you have to do is plug your controller into your usb with your charging cable, go into the system menu and enable gamepad, they under type select ps3. No need to download or install anything. The cross hotbar is labeled the exact same as the PS3. This does not, however, work with the PS4 controller.

Having a PS3 controller recognized as an XInput controller is perfectly fine, Motioninjoy and BetterDS3 both have that option alongside direct input. XInput is great for some newer games since they already have the controller setup for XInput, using DInput you have to configure it to the game assuming the game allows controllers. Otherwise you'd need like Joytokey to use a controller in some games.
PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers share essentially the same button layout, with the left stick and d-pad switched around. On the PC version of ARR you can even set it so the buttons the game displays either the ABXY or cross/circle/square/triangle layout. Having the PS3 controller recognized as a 360 controller makes no difference.
