Where did it all go wrong then?
*hides from fanboys*
Into 13 and people just didn't want to admit itSeriously though, it went "wrong" when 13 came around because people didn't expect it to be completely classic in a 'modern' era. People just didn't remember how linear FF games truly are.
I've played them all, and honestly the only one which I think was horrible was x-2. Although I do prefer the older ones, I think 13 was pretty good considering it drastically deviated from the original. But then again so did 8, and I love 8 as one of the best ones. I love the FF games, and ARR gives me hope for epic future releases still. 3 series will never die for me. Zelda, Smash Brothers xD and Final Fantasy. The thing is most people are nostalgic about the games they played as kids or teens and now this 'new' stuff sucks, when it really doesn't. It's just different. They can't copy paste their old stuff the whole time, they need to make new things. I'm just hoping for a Final Fantasy set in the time frame of like 6 to be released one day with current gen, tech. Swords, shields, magic, espers and a fkn good time!
It went "wrong" by innovating for each game, instead of giving us the same stale format a la Zelda, Mario, etc.
People claim they want game series to evolve over time, but when they do they throw a fit.
Edit: I'm not saying FFXIII was perfect, but it's also not worthy of nearly the amount of trash talk it gets.

When we say 'evolve' we don't mean change the things that make Final Fantasy into Final Fantasy. Extreme linearity and only allowing you to control one character in battle is not Final Fantasy. There weren't even any towns ffs.
Other than those things, I will admit that Final Fantasy 13 was not a terrible game. I understand that to some it's extremely good and then to others (like me) it's just a decent Final Fantasy. I'm not trying to start any hate here I'm just saying that the reasons you think we have for disliking Final Fantasy 13 aren't true. The battle system was very innovating (unfortunately only let us control 1 character), the story was good, the world was gorgeous, the voice acting was high quality, the music was... well it was okay, definitely nothing like the past Final Fantasy's music however, but again that's just a matter of opinion.
FF13 is a decent game. It just suffers because of high expectations of it being a FF game. Sort of like Dragon Age -> Dragon Age 2 and FFXI -> FFXIV.
I love all of the FFs and I smack people when they say FF13 was terrible, while the combat system was weird of course (controlling on person as previously said) I did not hate it. However when 13-2 came out I fell in love with it. What is truly funny is people complain about it changing yet for FF15 (Which everyone wants so bad apparently me included) the combat is supposed to be closer to kingdom hearts. Yet I havent heard outcry there about it crapping on FFs roots.
Ah. The good old days. Heck, with the PS release of Final Fantasy, they even nerfed it for the US market and made an "easy mode".
But I still remember grinding away and winning with 4 white mages and beating it. Haha!
What about FF IX? Never hear about that one...first time in a long time they went back to multiple races in the FF series, wasn't it?
