Just today, I got this as well.
Before I logged out last night - 14-15 hours ago from now - I was just leveling BTN, and quickly teleported to the nearest Aetheryte before signing out (Coerthas).
Been trying to fiddle with a few things, in case it was just some odd bug in connection with maybe some things. I recently reinstalled VirtualBox and it's "Host-only" Connection thing that makes XI lag, but that's a couple of days ago now, so not thinking it could really be that.
Not too enthusiastic about what I've seen some people write about redownloading the game, especially not here with 1Mb/s and risk of corruption of data along the line (far from the nearest relay here), rendering the entire download corrupted, and needing to redownload even several more times (as it was with ESO).
Somebody had written something about maybe moving your settings and the folder of FFXIV over in another, and then reinstall it (from disc) - and then when done, you just transfer the files back over in its installed folder, making it the same as before - if that for some odd reason should 'fool' it to get it working - though for myself, I don't have the physical copy of the game, and thus can't try that idea. The bug is so odd that that idea might just work, since neither makes sense as to why it should happen to start with.
I guess if the error message (1012) is 'serious, I guess it means something got corrupted in the game-data; but in that case it would be nice with a 'repair game' feature or some sort (not that I know how those technically work - without needing to get all the same data of the entire game down, again, anyway).
So not sure what to do for now - somebody else also just wrote it suddenly started working for him after "building a tall snowman" (assuming he means he went away for a while, and was it working later the same day).
Anyway, I write too much D:
Oh, I also tried signing into another Data center, just to see if that might do something - but nothing, and still broken (checked just now) at the end of my post.
----------------------
Edit:
So well - Not sure what fixed it on my end, but I both waited, simply, and also restarted my PC (My PC is usually on 24/7, I know some issues resolve themselves though with just a reboot - so it is likely just that, but mayhaps not in all situations)
So just to clarify for those that might have the issue too - and to not abandon the post and not leave any idea for those, again, that might stumble across the same issue - in my case, it seems as if simply a reboot fixed it (thought it might).
Otherwise I just tried different things on the main menu, like opening up until then, and just pressing exit again, if that mgiht 'trigger' whatever bug that the game had left when I signed out last time.
So, solution, again: Reboot - first of all!
