They can design new dungeon gear with the materia system in mind. Give the gears less basis stats and give the players the option to fill up the missing stats till the specific stat cap.

I don't think 1 materia slot would break the game tbh, especially if you can't meld the main stats.

Why do some people have such a huge problem with the idea of a little bit of customization? Are people like Jinko going to throw an even bigger fit if SE DID allow more customization of gear, or are people like him just shouting at anyone who suggests something other than the status quo?

I am not set against it, I would welcome it, but the thing is its not going to happen, if they dev team wanted customisation at end game it would already be in the game.
Also shouldn't a suggestion like this go in the feedback forums ?

Didn't I read they are remaking the materia system ?, maybe your hope lies there.
