I hope they start some horizontal progression on expansion. It seems a perfect timing for it. We just have to voice it loud enough.
depends we have 3 options to choose in weapons
allagan weapons
tomestone weapons
now zodiac weapons (these will take time but you can customize the stats)
is that the horizontal progession you wanted? i mean yes they will be replaced in the next tier patch but you will have 3 choices again (maybe more)
iLvL has nothing to do with character level. It just determines how many stat points can be applied too it.
Also, you might want to get used too it. As it is currently designed, it could go all the way up to 9999.

the numbers are pretty arbitrary, outside of gear req's for instances which are notoriously low they have no actual bearing on game play.
in games with out the ilvl stat, gear still gets more powerful even after you cap your character lvl. this just gives people an easy reference opposed to having to constantly compare stats on endgame gear.
Welcome to mmorpg's, you must be new here.
I'd prefer for them to balance and work on a system of specific stats either through Materia or upgrades that increase class related stats. Right now we can build towards Crit, Det, skill speed and accuracy, while taking hits to the other 3. But that's about it. It'd be neat to see them introduce skills that enhance the length of your debuffs, boost buff duration, or strength of attacks like Jump.
In 1.0 I believe we had a skill stat for enmity but I could be misremembering. And I do miss joke skills in XI like "Increases blahblah during the daytime, decrease accuracy at night."
We /do/ have passive traits that equalise us, but if they can't do it to gear, perhaps they should introduce some sort of system that levels up our characters at a class level. I don't play any other MMO's, but would that be comparable to a class tree? Upgrade tree? In FFXI they had a system like that where you could get points towards something similar.
I know it wasn't popular then but it would be a helluva lot preferable than this power creep we got going on here. I'm really sick of them just making the numbers bigger on the same fourish things.
If, as people say, iLevel is simply a way to see at a glance how powerful an item is and otherwise doesn't matter, how about this suggestion: Give us the option to toggle on/off seeing iLevel on our character and on items. The people that like/don't care about seeing ilevel get to see 90, 100, 500050000000 on their swords, those that don't feel comfortable seeing such a large number on a level 60 character are happy. A small change, but perhaps one worth thinking about?
