I blame the large amounts of coffee I consumed today and my lack of sleep for this...
There's no warning, no way to prepare. Rogue Aetheryte crystals start appearing all across Eorzea, randomly placed around the map. Each time a new crystal appears, it spawns a number of Garlean Soldiers near it.
The level and difficulty of each soldier depends on its location. If one spawns near Briar Bush, the soldier's level are around 20. Near Drybone, they're 30. Etc. The level isn't as important as the fact that fighting them should be somewhat of a challenge for the level of players who normally flock to these camps.
The rules are simple.
- Rush the soldiers and defeat them.
- Take too long and more respawn.
- Once all the soldiers are defeated, the crystal spawns a mini-boss(es) which when defeated breaks the crystal.
Every hour, any number of crystals can spawn. (Usually between 1 to 4.)
Every hour that a crystal remains intact increases the number of soldiers that spawn around it. (And creates a bigger ring of soldiers surrounding the crystal.)
If a crystal hasn't been destroyed after 12 hours, all teleportation in and around that region gets blocked. No teleporting in or out, no exceptions. If your return point is in that area, you get teleported to the closest unoccupied city or maybe closest resistance camp. (More on that later.)
The camp closest to this 12-hour crystal is now closed, the guards are gone with only Garlean soldiers hovering around.
So, for example, a crystal gets spawned in an out of the way place near the Silver Bazaar and goes unchallenged for 12 hours, all teleportation to and from Horizon is now blocked and Camp Horizon is now closed.
This, in turn, boosts the number of crystals and soldiers spawned in that zone.
Once all the camps get locked down, the city-state is now occupied. All NPCs go into hiding, and the only guards seen are at the resistance camps. There are shops open at these camps, but goods cost more than they would in a city.
This means, the Adventure Guild is shutdown so no more leves for that region. The same goes for all other shops and guilds. You are now kill on site to all the Garlean soldiers occupying the city.
A city can not be taken back directly. The soldiers in the city are extremely high level, have a large aggro range and respawn quickly. For each camp in the region that is reclaimed, the foothold the soldiers have on a city is reduced, dropping the level and respawn rate.
Once all the soliders are defeated, a cutscene occurs for everyone in the zone and when it ends, the city has been returned to normal.
After this event eventually ends (or even while it is going on) the still occupied Ala Mhigo and its surrounding region is now explorable. This area follows the same rules as above, with maybe a few more twists and turns to keep things interesting.
What is the Garlean Empire still looking for inside Ala Mhigo and what happens when they discover it?
And maybe for fun, at the start of this invasion, one of the cities gets occupied immediately. You've got to fight to get it back!
So, what's your Garlean Invasion plan?
