    Clarification: The Scholar Fairy

    Hello all.

I just want to clarify or get a consensus/opinion about the scholar fairy. I shall put dot points from what I learned from the quests. I could be wrong, it was my interpretation.
    • Each scholar soul stone has one unique fairy attached
    • The soul stone we obtain has one fairy named "Lily" attached to it
    • "Eos" and "Selene" are two aspects of the one fairy, Lily
    • "Eos" represents the sunlight Lily can harness; "Selene" represents the moonlight Lily can harness.

This seems to be the case. Much like how some (all?) soulstones retain the experiences of those who came before, the Scholar stone seems to also retain the memories the fairy used by said scholar. Perhaps this is what differentiates it from Carbuncle, who is a form designed by strategic need and broken down into a mathematical formula as its summoning ritual. Perhaps the fairy is summoned to obey, but as you work together, the experiences are saved into the stone for later use, and the fairy by virtue of this gains a unique identity. I'm not really sure how it works, I'm just making guesses.

Also seems to be the case - at least, it is the same fairy that was called Lily by the SCH who carried the stone previously before succumbing to the tonberry sickness. Whether her name is actually Lily and has been since the first carrier is unknown.

That's what the system text implies when it explains how it works, you summon a fairy who manifests as either an aspect of healing or support.

No idea on that part. Eorzea is based on Greece and thus takes Greek concepts. If I remember correctly, Eos is the Greek goddess of Dawn, Selene the Greek goddess of the Moon, wife of the God of Dusk. Lily I'm not sure about the connection. Eorzea does have lilies (flowers) and lilies are yellow, perhaps its the same shade of yellow shared by Selene/Eos?

The "sunlight" and "moonlight" part I got from the level 30 scholar quest, when you are introduced to the "Selene" and "Eos" modes of the fairy. It says something along the lines of Eos being of the sunlight and Selene being of the moonlight, or using the power of sunlight and moonlight, or something. Not a direct quote (clearly).

    The direct quote is:

Alka Zolka: (reading from an ancient tablet)
"The sunlight of Eos doth soothe and shield."
"The moonlight of Selene doth silence and strengthen."

But since I can only double-check the portions of dialog that appear during cutscenes (as the above does), I don't remember quite how it described the two aspects of one fairy. At any rate, your description matches the way I remember it.

I think it is two aspects of one fairy. When you summon her for the first time, she flickers back and forth between the two.

She does! If I remember correctly, the Nymian text in the level 30 quest refers to her as one fairy with two aspects.

Also to note, now that I've finally finished the Scholar storyline, the tonberry repeatedly calls Eos "My Sunlight" in the level 50 and 45 is it? Maybe 40. Since only Eos shows up in the cutscenes (even when you have Selene), I can't say if it's a nickname for that form or for Lily in general. But given previous replies, I'm going to say it's a petname for Eos.

Well it seems Lily is the fairy's name, as when you talk to Alka Zolka as a scholar he says:

"Such a pleasure to see you again, L'yhan! I trust you and Lily have had many a grand adventure since last we spoke?"

Eorzean history and lore focuses a lot on light and darkness and the passing from one into another, so the single fairy manifesting both sun and moon aspects is consistent with a lot of Eorzea's deep veneration of the two concepts.

I just want to add that this "two aspects of one faery" statement does not exist in the french translation of the game.
The faerie also has no name (lily is never mentionned) and Alka Zolka always use plural when talking about your faeries: Selene and Eos (as two different entities).

I don't know wich translation is closer to the japanese version, I like the idea of two aspects very much though.
I asked on the "translation" french forum about this.

When asking Alko Zolka as a lvl 50 sch for his "what are schs?" speech he says that "fairies are otherworldly creatures which the scholars learned to bind and control". It could be the translator's artistic license but in the sch quest line but I don't remember them ever specifically saying at the fairies where magically created entities like Carbuncle. They certainly seem to have more personality than any other summons. Although that personality does not seem to be appropriate for what we know of voidsent, so I don't really know where fairies could come from. Perhaps they are related to the "essence" of the primals? That does not really fit either though . . .
