    Let's talk about PvP

It's been recently announced that PvP will be implemented and possibly might play a major roll in end game and/or ranking up.

Most of us are familiar with the mixed emotions about adding PvP to FFXIV. On the one hand people are afraid that balancing classes toward PvP will ruin PvE. Also, open world PvP is hotly contested by many people as they are against being PKed at any time.

One the other hand, some people feel that FFXIV will do well to have ballista-style PvP and some even feel that it's incomplete and wont be able to compete with other MMOs without it.

During beta I did a PvP poll on the forums as it is a very interesting topic to me. Sadly, those forums are closed now and I can't bring back the results. However, I remember the general attitude of the majority of beta testers.

The voting choices were comparative to FFXI (as that's the PvP experience most of us have in common) and structured somewhat like this:

    a) I prefer PvP to play a stronger, more central role than in XI

    b) I prefer PvP to be about on the same scale as in XI

    c) I prefer that PvP does not exist in XIV

This is not an exact replica of the poll in the beta forums (it was a year ago and I have no saved records of it so I am going on memory). Somewhere in the area of 150 people voted and the vast majority of people voted for option "b". People who voted for option "c" constituted about half the amount that voted for "b." Even less voted for option "a" but there was a surprising number (imo) who felt this way. Votes were accompanied by reasons behind them and many people agreed that PvE should take priority but having PvP would also be nice.

So what is the attitude now, after one year? I'm not trying to start a poll, by all means feel free to vote, but I will not be tallying them up as I did in beta.

My opinion: PvP is awesome. Fighting computers is fun but there's a unique feeling when competing against a human mind and is very rewarding in a much different way.

b for me. The day pvp starts affecting the way classes play in pve is the day i quit this game. There are many great pvp games out there that people can enjoy, but im playing FFXIV because it's 100% pve.

There are plenty of others out there that is focused on PvP. If PvP is to be implemented I only want to see it as voluntary. I would prefer to see it just in arena situations. I am with Mimmo on this - PvP starts dictates the classes in FFXIV I am out as well.

If it were up to me, option C, no PvP.

If I were thinking of the community as a whole, then B might be okay - sanctioned, arena/battleground PvP only.

I'm a very PvE focused player who gravitates toward story, questing, dungeon/raid content.

Games like Warhammer that were more PvP focused bored me very quickly. Games like Aion that forced you into world PvP were very frustrating to me. In general, PvP is not competitive fun for me, it often ends up pissing me off IRL very much like road rage (honestly, there's nothing fun about some snotty kid ganking you, then doing /rude /spit). In WoW, the only PvP I actually enjoyed was large-scale events like Wintergrasp (and to a lesser extent Tol Barad, but it just ended up feeling like a larger version of Arathi Basin).

In short, the only PvP I enjoy is when there is a strategic goal. Taking a keep. Storming the opposite faction's city and taking down their leader, or, conversely, defending my own city. It's probably the raider in me. So, honestly, I could probably get just as much enjoyment out of large-scale PvE. One of my favorite activities in FFXI was Besieged.

Come patch day, if I have to see my class take a list of nerfs for the sake of PvP balance, it's just not worth it.

I like Final Fantasy MMOs because there is one faction. It feels as though we come together for a common goal. I don't want that feeling to change.

TL;DR I play this game because it's PvE focused and would like to see it stay that way.
