Did I pick the wrong server or..?

First of all I'd just like to say Hi I just purchased FFXIV: ARR yesterday and wanted to check in on the forums. so....Hello

now the meat of the thread:

Did I pick the wrong server? I am on Malboro NA and it seems like every 15 minutes someone is sending me a tell about buying Gil with real money. Is this a widespread problem? What can I, the average player, do to stop it?

I am a fan of Playing the game and earning my rewards and intend to subscribe for awhile, I've already pre-ordered the CE for PS4. But I am a bit dissapointed at the spam for using real money to get in game perks (the reason I pick a subscription MMO is to avoid this kind of shit)

Anyways thanks for listening and hopefully there is some way to help put an end to the endless spam.

Sadly RMT tells aren't going anywhere anytime soon especially because its P2P & doing well atm. Best you can do is Blacklist them, when you get a /tell you can right click the name and "Add to Blacklist". After a few weeks go by feel free to clean out some of the names starting at the top, they only use them for a short time then make new ones.

You can also report the names of the spammers if you want (though I've kinda given up doing that personally >_>) by going to System->Support Desk-> Contact Us->Report Cheating/Harassment

So to answer your question, no it doesn't matter the server you're going to get those tells no matter where you go. But I've noticed when I've made alts I get WAY more tells as a low level character starting out then on my Main (I still get them, but not as many). So that might be another reason you're getting so many right now.

Hope that helps & you enjoy the game. Try not to let the spam tells ruin your fun! ^_^b

Alas... I doubt that changing the server will affect the frequency you receive RMT /tell. Time ago I thought that the bots detected you if you wrote something in /shout (At least that happened in other games) But not the case here, bot detect you automatically with a super dubby magical way and you can't escape their big AoE supreme spam attack.

There's an option too for avoid receiving tells. Or, another less drastical, to don't make the tell give you that annoying sound. In my case I receive their tells but it doesn't make the sound.

You can do that in Character configuration...Or System Configuration, can't remember. Where you can edit the chats and all that, or the sounds, you can edit the option to receive a sound when receiving a tell, or to don't even receive tells (Or receive them, but not read them in your main general chat, that's the same...)

    It's all about personalization...

Welcome!.... Your first days, at least that happened to me, you'll spend more time customization the options, configurating crossbar or hotbars, the HUD, etc...Than playing. And that's awesome.

If you need help, don't be shy and ask, this is the section of the forum for it and we are here for helping!

PS: And don't worry if you don't read tells, you'll rarely need to use tells for communicating with people, there are many other chats in-game, actually you could use the Free Company (Guilds)'s chat... Or even linkshell chats (Some kind of private chats you make where you invite the people you want to speak with, regardless of their Free Company, other linkshells, etc.). Even, if you want, you can send a party request to a player you want to 'give a tell'. If the player accepts the party, you can use the party channel for speak with that person, it's like a tell too in that sense.

Thanks god RMT only spam the /tell channel.

The RMTs are everywhere. :/ Blacklist them and move on.
As Adrian noted, at least *now* they are only on the tells. They used to spam shouts until SE put in protections against that. I don't recommend blocking /tells altogether though. Occasionally someone wants to message you for a valid reason .. like asking questions
They seem to go in waves and I suspect rotate between servers. We (on Malboro) seems to be having another wave right now.

    In other news..
    Welcome to Eorzea and Malboro!
Look me up online if you have any questions. I'm in Gridania a lot of the time so we may have run past each other.
One of my FC mates posted this thread a couple weeks ago for anyone new to Malboro and there are some other people who have offered to help out new players listed on there - http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...s-on-Malboro-D

You won't escape them completely, especially on NA servers, but some servers are worse than others. Up until a few weeks ago, I would get maybe one spammer a night (not even one sometimes, maybe three nights a week), who would send two tells and then shut up. I wasn't even blacklisting anymore; the difference between blacklisting and not was literally one /tell. That had been the case for months, while reading threads from other servers where people would be blacklisting five or more spammers a day. In the last couple weeks, it's increased, and I now have 1-2 blacklist entries a night (because they no longer stop after two tells).

Japanese servers apparently have next to zero RMT spam. But with Japanese servers, you've got the language barrier and latency.

Blacklist tip: Clear it out regularly. Characters that are actually deleted show as (Deleted), but when an account gets banned, they don't bother deleting the characters, so those will still show in your blacklist, even though they can safely be removed after a couple of days.

Thanks for the tips, good to see there are some good people in this community! I played WoW when I was in high school for about a year and dropped it then I went to EvE online and I've been there for the last 5 years haha, I felt like going back to the fantasy and there's no doubt in my mind Final Fantasy is the place to be!

Thanks for that link sagittarian! good to see I wasn't in the wrong picking the server named after my favorite cigarette. and Adrian74 that is a badass leap of faith in your signature.

Well yea just thanks everyone for the timely and informative responses ^^

Lol. But I have to make a minor correction...
    This is a Malboro:

    This is a Marlboro:

The warnings for them are a bit different...

After dealing with the first a lot you may not be as fond of the second. Malboro's have been known to cause low-grade PTSD in addition to all the other status effects.

Thanks, hahaha. Also, when I think in Malboro I also think in the cigarrettes, even if I don't smoke, it's just like "Ouch, Malboro?!... That's a very smokey server!"

Hope to see you active in the forum few weeks, but right now first thing is go enjoy game and do a nice leap of faith wherever you can!

just turn off your tells, and you wont have to put up with the RMTs anymore. Besides, anyone that isn't an RMT that sends you a tell is usually not worth replying to anyway. If you want to talk to your friends, there are linkshells.
