Unfortunately, we don't know if it's recurring or not, but honestly, I'd prefer it that way. That way it'd feel more like a sub and less like a rotten business model. Is subscription fee a microtransaction?
Is an optional additional fee charged a microtransaction, that we don't even know if it's recurring or onetime?
Microtransactions to me are when you pay a miniscule amount of money for some item, and can do that whenever you want as many times as you want.
Paying for extra bullets in some mobile phone game... that's microtransaction. These retainers... I can't fit them under the microtransaction umbrella...
This was the original plan they had in 1.0.
I never particularly cared for it myself, but as long as I can still put most of my rare stuff in the wardrobe, I can manage the rest of my items.
Not sure why people are complaining.... There was a similar micro from FFXI. One extra retainer isn't going to help you down the next set of coils. Even if they came to you fully max leveled, the venture system isn't going to give you an advantage on the market where everything is already undercut. QQ about something that's worth fixing.
You should have bought an authenticator.....
Your tears feed me....
I doubt any company would turn down the chance to earn extra revenue. As much as I hate the latest trend with SE and pushing micro transactions onto all of their recent releases, I feel that if people weren't paying, they wouldn't do it. That being said, this seems like a situation where supply and demand win over sowing seeds of good will with your fanbase. As long as people keep paying for it, there will be more additional services like this tacked on to get your hard earned money.
Don't want to deal with it? Want a change? Stop paying. It's that simple. You'll find that such strong will is not really easy to be found these days. At least not for fans of a video game with cat people in it, I guess. Really though it's no reason to unsub over simply because some dude with more money buys some extra retainers or Gil or Fantasia or world transfers or future services to be named later.
You can define it in multipple ways - In general it's for paying for extra services not offered by the base price. DLC's are microtransaction because you're buying additional content or usually "bonus" items for an additional fee not in your $40-$70 game purchase. Is subscription fee a microtransaction?

It's usually tied to P2W/F2P games but it exists everywhere, it just has a negative connotation when it comes to certain groups and SE is notorious for it lately lol.
That's exactly what I plan to do if this change sees the live release, as said in the OP.

They are gathering worthless items for crying out loud, it wouldnt even bother me if ppl went all their way to purchase multiple retainers and put them all on ventures, market will be overloaded anyway and prices will went to shit, its not even P2W, geez... Just because they are introducting microtransaction, it doesnt necessarilly will put someone in major disadvantage or put it this way, winning this game.
NO. CAPS FOR EMPHASIS.
UNLESS THEY LET MY RETAINER FARM TWINTANIA.
