    Auto-attack for magic users?

I am wondering if magic users can get an auto-attack spell set up for them? I am thinking something like "magic missile" or "spirit dart" that shoots a ranged spell automatically? I know other fighters have an auto attack used as a baseline skill that goes off at intervals when engaged in a target, and I think that would be nice to do as a magic user. I even think archers auto attack with arrows from a distance. Would be nice to be able to do some damage without having to always mash the same spell buttons over and over.

You can auto-attack as a magic user. You just hit people with your magic stick.
I think back when they first introduced auto-attack before 2.0 magic users had a ranged auto attack, though.

Caster do have an auto attack. You have to be in melee range to take advantage of it. This isnt ideal which prolly why Casters have higher Weapon Damage on their weapons vs Melee. For example SMN Relic has 69 magic damage vs MNK 46 Physical.

Yeah, Disciples of Magic can use auto-attack like melee classes, it's just not set by default on the hotbar, so you have to open the Actions and Traits menu and set it manually onto your hotbar (in Actions and Traits it's found in the 'General' section, the same place Limit Break and Sprint are found for instance). As has been stated though it's not very effective, but early on and especially while soloing, it all adds up.

Auto Attack from magic user contributes up to around 1.5% - 2% of your total DPS.

To me, unless you are very confident in dodging everything comes your way while you are in melee range, drop that idea!

If you can dodge well, then go ahead.

Yes but its not just about dodging, its about interrupting your casts because your in melee and had to dodge, and interrupted spells are a DPS loss, so even if your pro dodger you really should only do it on certain fights.

^ or you should never do it, unless of course it is part of boss strat such as Titan Ex and Ifrit Ex.

#inb4 "lol nub NeoAmon, don't know how to play, b**** can't dodge, l2p bro."

Seriously part of playing BLM correctly is minimizing movements as much as possible without eating any hit from the boss. Dat 64 damage per auto attack is nothing to a BLM staying in the back, dodging everything and dishing out the maximum damage his job allows.

Your PoV can also refer to range dps. Being range dps doesn't mean you do not need to dodge. It is the same thing. Most of the fight in this game allows you to sit comfortably in melee range while suffers the same amount of dodging from boss.

Honestly most of the big fights now involve, or at least allow, you being on the butt of the boss for at least a decent chunk of their health. All Titans, Ifrit EX, Twintania, first and last dreadnaught in T4 come to mind immediately. If I'm already there I just right click the enemy to make sure I auto attack when I can too. It's nice if I get targetted for conflags, run it and watch myself slap Twin in the ass just before i get hit with fetters.

Also Arcanist has good strength so our auto attacks do ok damage.
