Being good at something you enjoy is fun. Let's use the basketball analogy again. You play basketball you have fun playing but then you work at it and learned how to shoot fadeaways, dribble, etc. Now you have more fun because you feel like you got better and can do more things. Sure you can still have fun playing before you learned all those new things but I'm sure you would enjoy the game more now that you got better at it. Get it? This whole "I play for fun" thing never made sense to me. Not like the person that plays differently isn't having fun.
