I think most of you miss the point in solo play in FFXIV. you don't want to rely on parties every time you want to do something. In FFXI I played as mainly MNK and sometimes PUP both 75 (rather solo friendly jobs IMHO). I used to be able to solo exp on things like imps as MNK and I could solo quests and I could just mess about if I wanted to, then take on some higher level NM's as PUP if my MNK couldn't handle it. All the while I could flag up and if I get an invite during these solo times, I could just teleport back and head to parties or events. It's kind of a lone wolf thing more than anything really. You don't want to feel totally useless on your own, but at the same time you can go party up with other people whenever you want
