Things SE is doing with FFXIV:

Modernizing it and making it appeal to a larger audience.

Things SE is not doing with FFXIV:

Bringing back FFXI's stupid engine that was exploited to hell and back by players (who sometimes thought that it was a feature, i.e. gear swapping mid-combat, spells that cast at 68% on the bar, haste shenanigans).

Something tells me you never got to end game in ffxi. Gear swapping gave a ton of gear value that you wouldn't normally use in a regular fight and gave people goals to get more gear sets further which would create more end game content for people that wanted to take part in it. Without gear swaps they will pretty much be negating every single piece of gear after every expansion and SE is way too slow with pushing out content to make this work.

And before people start bringing up the fact that ffxi's end game content consisted of camping nm spawns for 24 hours, there were only like 3 mobs that had spawn times that would force linkshells to camp them in shifts, all the other 24 hour spawns only had a 3 and a half hour pop window in which the mob could only spawn every half an hour in that window giving people free time to do plenty of things outside of the game as long as they were there for the minute or so that there was a chance for the mob to spawn every half hour.

    In conclusion

What SE is doing - Listening to forum trolls who have barely played this game because it is the worst thing on the planet and won't like it no matter what they do to try and "fix" the content as opposed to using ideas that have already been proven to work in a past SE MMO that was very successful as far as MMOs go for a very long time.

What SE isn't doing - realizing that the people who are crying and screaming for crap that adds barely anything of value to the game won't ever play this game once it becomes pay to play.

But hey, what do I know, its not like they alienated half their ffxi player base when they made everything accessible with little to no time invested with the travesty that was abbysea right?

not sure if people corrected this but:

    1) Gear swapping was part of it, if you played FFXI like you said, you knew they created gear that worked with it. there were tons of pieces that were purely meant for swapping, they constantly put out pieces that were super specific...so even if they didnt intend it to be that way...it clearly turned out that way (i didnt love it, but it wasnt an exploit)

2)the 68% cast was on purpose....its called fast cast. The more you had, the quicker it would cast. If you looked, the animation would start early, but it would not finish (do the damage/effect) until it was finished (100%).

    3) Haste made complete sense, and it was desired so much for a reason, it was a powerful stat, wich most games have some stats that are more desired then others. Of course the community are the ones that too it to extremes some times.
