Racial statistics at the start of the game are actually ultimately irrelevant in the long run, unlike FFXI, so don't be afraid to go with a race and class combination you like but which might appear at first to be 'odd' (gear ultimately boosts your stats anyway so whatever tiny difference in DEX for instance will easily be made up in the gear you equip). If you want a roegadyn CNJ for instance, do it!

There's a really fantastic website called Crafting as a Service. In addition to providing materials lists for what ingredients crafters need, it also has an Equipment Calculator that's pretty useful for anyone, whether crafting or not. (Stuff removed by quoter) .
OMG! THANK YOU. Was just browsing the forums and saw this and checked it out. It's amazing. Let's me know how much stuff I need from my Gatherer class for my Crafter class items. This is great. THANK YOU!!!

I wouldn't level up using Fates as suggested, follow the storyline, more gil, equipment rewards, and you will learn different mob mechanics, also a little lore doesn't hurt.

Dungeons are good for exp and keep you thinking as part of a team.

Most decent equipment will be rewarded to you, that is not as much a concern as learning your rotations to get the maximum output and efficiency imo

    Cautionary Tips

I agree with being thoughtful whether to fate grind or not.

people will say that, it's what they've done in the past, but their isn't always the people when you start out again

    5 tips if you do
to get a gold in most FATEs, you only need to participate in it's objective for ~2 minutes
Healing capable chocobo's will aid you a lot if you're solo or lacking fate players
if you're a healer class, you can participate in any fate by healing others PC or/NPC, sometimes even one cure gets you a gold
Joining fate parties Aren't faster for single mob fates (like NMs) but you get a fair amount of xp if your party claims multiple mob fates
Don't be afraid to switch to Class instead of job, if you find yourself soloing. jobs are mostly for party roling
Over all there are many and since 2.2 newer ways to get XP (challenge log unlock quest in limsa)
