What made you pick the class/job that you play over other roles?

I'm curious as to what made other pick the class/jobs that they currently play. So, to start with myself:

Although I started playing both tanks and healers, I eventually decided on playing scholar as my main, with warrior as my second job, and black mage as my third.

I was originally torn between the scholar and white mage due to both practical and aesthetic reasons. My character's appearance (green hair and eyes) went along pretty well with the white mage outfit. At the time, white mage was the preferred healer job due to Eos controls not having been quite finished yet, so it was difficult to get her to work the way people wanted. However, my FC said they needed scholars for their static coil groups, so I dedicated my time to gearing up scholar as opposed to white mage.

Given that tanks get into content fairly quickly, and that it was one of my original job choices, I chose to gear up a tank instead of a damage dealer. I chose Warrior primarily because it appeared to have more complexity to it than Paladin during leveling, although that changed a bit upon hitting 50 with both. Still, I found it easier to acquire the necessary accuracy gear with warrior than paladin, due to the extreme primal weapon "dual haken."

Black mage was a natural third choice due to all the cloth gear I had stored up over the course of leveling my previous classes/jobs. I had been debating switching my third job to bard since I enjoyed the bard's smoother dps and mobility over having to sit still to cast spells, but after getting the hang of minimizing my movements as a black mage I'm no longer bothered by the difference in mobility anymore.

Conclusion:
Despite being a little harder to get into dungeons than a tank, I found healing as a scholar to be enjoyable and different than what I'm used to, and so chose to pursue that over the other roles. While I'd love to play a dps role as my secondary role, the lack of accessibility to end game content as a damage dealer greatly influenced my decision to take up tanking. My ideal role would be a damage dealer/healer hybrid or tank/healer hybrid.

After playing all the classes except the Lancer (only 15 i think?) I've always favored the Blackmages in Final Fantasy games. I love blowing up stuff into oblivion!

Because of Vivi and Lulu and any other FF Black Mage.
I stuck with it and like it the best (out of my leveled classes) because it is the easiest for me to understand.

Been playing dps classes since I started on MMOs years ago. Lately, though, I've been zoning out/falling asleep in dungeons. So, I decided to try tanking for once. Made a new character for a completely fresh start. So far I'm having more fun than I would've expected. I've also managed to keep the mistakes to a minimum. Here's hoping it stays that way. On both counts.

White Mage and Summoner were my main and preferred jobs in XI, so I wanted to reflect that here. Like a parent unable to let go of their glory days, I selfishly latched XI Kye's identity onto XIV's.

All kidding aside, magic classes have always interested me more than physical ones. Summons, Primals, Espers, etc. have always been a huge reason why I love the Final Fantasy series. And more often than not, I feel I relate to characters who are more magic-inclined than brute warriors in previous Final Fantasy games and other series. In group settings, I feel more comfortable playing a healer role. While adventuring alone, I prefer to have a pet around. So both these jobs reflect how I see myself in a MMO world.

And Minwu. In a female dominated job, I wanted to be a male White Mage just like Minwu!

I am main black mage. Originally, that came from me being main thaumaturge in 1.0

I loved the duality of life/death, sacrifice your HP to heal your allies, and stealing attributes to bolster yourself or your allies.
Feeding on corpses to refill your MP was great too, and punishing barbs was just silly.

I'm quite sad that Blackmage is so simple now compared to its origin, but out of all the jobs (I have them all at 50), I find blackmage's playstyle is the one that suits me best. It's less about rotation, and more about watching procs and having good judgement (especially on when to switch between fire and ice) than other jobs.

I "raid" the coil on monday as BLM and tuesday as BRD. I have probably twice as much fun on my blackmage as I do on bard. Just so much spamming of buttons on the later (maybe it's just because of the way I have macros for everything on Bard)

As soon as I saw Scholar's faeries, I knew it was the perfect class for me. Healing plus a healing companion = must have for me.
And we stuck through thick and thin, even while faeries were quite... clumsy, I never thought about abandoning this job.
I do also enjoy Summoner for similar reasons.

I choose to be a Whm originally since in general i love healing and helping people, started leaning towards Sch lately, it's a fun healing class especially after learning how to control and use the pets properly.
