That's only if you stretch the idea of the holy warrior *really* far, at which point you could fit *any* physical class with a remotely mystical theme to be a holy warrior. Templar is right smack dab in the middle of the holy warrior concept, right beside PLD: it's not "kind of" a holy warrior; it's an explicit holy warrior in the exact same vein. Templar is basically defined as a PLD that uses spears and knightswords instead of greatswords and knightswords.

Even if you make Templars devoted to the Ishgardian religious body, you're just creating a job that's just a paladin of a different organization: the theme is the exact same but you're changing the paint job a little. It would be just like giving CNJ a DPS job but have it join a secret cabal of users of an ancient magic of great power sealed away ages ago; all you're doing is parroting BLM. It's not like it *can't* be done, but it's really not the most creative or particularly interesting way to go about it. I'd much rather they actually try to do something other than give LNC the same paintjob that GLA gets when it's turned into PLD.

If they make a Tank job out of the DPS class that is Lancer, by definition it is going to be significantly more than just a paint job. See Arcanist to Scholar for an example.

I still say you are clinging to a trope with respect to what a holy warrior is. Holy warrior !=:= Paladin. Making a type of holy warrior out of Lancer will not be another Paladin, because as I explained before the ability mechanics make the game play, not what they're called or how they look. They just need to make the abilities function differently enough from the other tank types, and then name and animate them in a manner that suits the Templar lore.

Edit: I should note that although I think Templar is what they will go with because it hooks well into the existing lore of the game, I personally would like to see the second job for Lancer be a pet DPS class with a wyvern pet. It could fit into the lore as well as sort of an underground heretic warrior sect that has discovered not all dragons are evil, or they could discover that when a dragon is born it 'impresses' on whoever is present which is usually a dragon and thus evil but it happens to you instead this time, or they could even simply just embrace their dark side a la the 'outlaw warrior' Dark Knights of FFXI.

Except Paladins aren't actually holy in the slightest in 14. I'm not sure why everyone constantly forgets they're basically just Royal bodyguards, nothing more nothing less.

(Well okay they're a little more than that, but they're not connected to any religion or divine being.)

They do have Hallowed Ground which fits this theme, and they have the sub-class skills Cure, Raise, Protect, and Stoneskin. But yes, they're basically elite royal guards that swear a personal oath to defend and honour their duty... with just a dash of holy tossed in.

I wish PLD had a passive 'Cure' buff. As it stands, 'Stoneskin' is useful, but 'Cure' by a PLD is about the most inefficient use of MP in the game.
