[Guide] Placing tabletop items on furniture that won't let you

Disclaimer: I'm going to assume this is a glitch, but whatever because I should be able to put a lamp or vase whereever I damn well please.

That being said, there sure are a lot of objects with huge empty surfaces that scream for something to be put upon them, but the game tells you no. I'm going to tell you how to bypass this.

Edited for 2.3: Yes, I know Ahriman Cupboard is now flagged as a table. Surface Grid toggle adjustment.

It's simple with one requirement - you need an object that does allow stacking of roughly the same height. In my example I put an Oasis Vase "on" an Ahriman Cupboard, using a Manor Desk as an intermediary.

First, put the vase on the desk like normal. I have outlines turned on to visualise things better.

Place the desk where you want the vase to be.

(new to 2.2) Make sure Toggle Counter Surface Placement On/Off is turned OFF. (ignore it being turned on in the older screenshots)

Move the vase but do not place it. Instead, right-click to return it to its position. This breaks the connection between desk and vase.

As you can see, only the desk highlights now. However I can't just remove the desk because going into remove mode resets the connection.

Instead, place the desk away. This allows you to remove the desk and leave the vase floating in its position. You can move the target object (e.g. the cupboard) any time if necessary to fish out the intermediary object. You can also turn Surface Placement back on.

Thank you! I've just been assuming people were hiding manor flower-stands in their furniture.

Ah, this is lovely, thank you. Is there anything that is the same height as the company chest? I'd like to put something on top of it, but I am not seeing anything that is high enough. Manor Fireplace is the highest I can see, and it is still a bit shorter than the chest....

Can't help you there sadly. Chest is a pretty tall piece of furniture.

I have a problem. When we bought our House I placed a clock and Flowers on my Flame Desk in my Bedroom. But now someone removed it. Now I'm not able to put it back on the Desk. It always ends up at the Floor........
    What am I missing?

You don't actually need to place the item on top of another surface; it's only a visual thing, as demonstrated by our adorable cuddly friend here:

I found out accidentally that you could make something float and found this thread trying to find out how to replicate it. I made a new game, I call it Moogle Jenga:

So thank you for posting this, Jeykama!

Those GC desks have really broken hitboxes. My friend managed to finagle stuff onto his Adder desk but I've never been able to legit place something on the Uldah one. Push comes to shove, just use the trick and find a table that works as an intermediary - Ahriman Sideboard was about the right height for me.

@SeleneVenizelos - ah, yeah the trick just leaves the tabletop item's XYZ position frozen for sure. I'm not a fan of mysterious floating objects but the moogle pillar is hilariously cute.

I second this! I bought a desk from the GC's, and I'm unable to place anything on top of it, it always goes underneath it (wanted to put a flower vase on it). So, the desk remains bare. It's a desk... it's meant to have stuff on it! lol :P
